If the "save college sports" act passes is that the end of our recruiting advantage?

if we cant outbid everyone else for recruits are we just back to trying to sell our average at best program? seems like we should be actively working against it.

Seems like this could fix the current model of paying a sub par QB $3M.

I think government should stay out of it, but It doesnt; apply to NIL.

Admittedly, havent followed and not entirely sure how NIL works, but per google:

Direct school-to-athlete payments are capped at nearly $50 million per school year.

I guess you would just have to work around direct school payments?

Payments would go back to cash in duffle bags and new cars.

First thing that came to mind was things going back to the old ways where schools with the best cheating systems would stay at the top. You know who I am talking about.

Recruiting advantage? What advantage we are 2-2 and not even receiving votes anymore. If this is an advantage, I would hate to see a disadvantage.

The house isn't going to pass it, and the courts would find it unconstitutional anyway.

Not sure how to fix the system, but congress trying to limit earning power of the athletes while doing nothing about the schools or coaches probably isn't going to work.

NFL has a salary cap, contract rules and etc. NCAA needs to get off their ass and get it under control.

Yes, it is the end of our recruiting advantage. The advantage will go back to the traditional blue bloods that have more national appeal, because the NIL collectives associated with schools won't be able to coordinate NIL deals for players anymore. They will have to be true NIL deals, which most sponsoring companies will only offer to players at the most nationally recognized programs because they bring the most marketing value. A&M is not in that group unfortunately.

The solution is the House Agreement with periodic adjustments or a CBA with the student athletes at the table.

It works just fine at the pro level and the House Agreement is designed to take down and distribute approximately half of meaningful traditional revenue to profitable sports, which is football for us.

Cruz is a goober but Cantwell is actually protecting Title IX not football and basketball athletes but the compromise for higher pay to football and men's basketball players at least acknowledges the litigation history.

I doubt it passes the House unless Trump maintains a majority in both houses. Which seems unlikely.

We already do a pretty good job of squandering any recruiting advantage we may have so it really won't matter

Here are some of the other details per FOS.

  • Double the revenue-sharing cap and codify NIL (name, image, and likeness) rights for college athletes, but implement measures to limit cap-circumvention
  • Create a one-time transfer and implement a five-year, age-based eligibility policy
  • Impose restrictions on agents and limit coaching transfers
  • Offer a limited antitrust exemption and preemption of state laws to enforce transfer, eligibility, and player compensation restrictions
  • Require schools to maintain certain health and safety standards and require schools that make more than $80 million per year maintain Olympic and women's sports participation
  • Prohibit power conferences from merging or expanding beyond 20 members and make power conference schools go independent for three years before switching conferences (though this provision sunsets after six years)
  • Allow schools to pool and sell media rights as one package, provided 75% of FBS schools agree to do so
All of these provisions would take effect not on the day the bill is signed into law, but rather the first offseason/transfer portal period for each sport.

Interesting idea that was struck down: "prohibit schools from increasing ticket prices for sporting events year-to-year by more than 4%." I'm fine with whatever.

Notice these ads tell you absolutely ZERO about what's in the legislation, like the NCAA getting an anti-trust exemption?

Also, as college athletes are now paid entertainers, I think the market should dictate which sports survive and which don't. I DGAS about "women's sports" and "Olympic sports." If people like your sport, great. If not, it's a bummer, but that's how entertainment works.

What should really happen is that the NFL (most NFL players come from colleges) should help FCS college football players form a union and collective bargain to terms with the schools/conferences. Congress should stay out of it.

"Advantage" might not be the right word. It's more of an equalizer. We don't have the same level of brand recognition and national appeal for true NIL as those schools you listed, but our donor base and monetary resources allow us to make up for that with the money we can spend on players to outbid those schools. However, if every program is capped as to what they can spend on players, that equalizer disappears, because our players will not get nearly as many true NIL opportunities as programs like Ohio State, Miami, Texas and others. Our brand simply doesn't add the same level of marketing value to the average business as those more nationally recognized programs.

But those schools and others can offer just as much as we can, true NIL or otherwise. LSU spent more on their roster than we did and all I ever hear is how broke they supposedly are

The SEC and B1G negotiated the player number up from $21M to $49M, so there's negligible if any impact to the top spenders. Still no cap on coaches salaries or movement. Just a limit on player movement, salary cap, and a conference size limit of 20.

You're missing the point. True NIL cannot be associated with or coordinated by anyone affiliated with the school, and it would be policed heavily under this new law. The schools with the most national appeal therefore gain an immediate advantage. This isn't about how much money the school can scrounge up to spend.

I know it's too late but the NIL has ruined college football. If a player wants to get paid go to the NFL. Good luck. Let the NFL create a minor league.

College you get a scholarship tied to academics. The same academic requirements as every other student. That's your pay. Don't like it then get a real job.

I'd guess it's our #1 recruiting class incoming. We haven't spent on the portal hardly at all compared to the good programs.

It's not a good plan as currently structured, and would lead immediately to a court case with the outcome being collective bargaining for athletes... which would castrate the NCAA. Which, come to think of it, might not be a bad thing.
