I laugh when I see people adamantly demand that we insert this mythical QB running game prominently into our game plan. We don't have a QB to execute that plan. Reed is not a runner, he's a scrambler. He's not physical and doesn't run well in traffic. He requires large open fields where he can utilize his speed and quickness which is why most of his yardage comes on broken plays.
Last year his strengths were that he was a streaky passer and could use his scramble ability to pick up key 1st downs and off-schedule yardage.
This year, he's lost the streaky good part and has only been bad. Now his confidence is in a steaming wreck.
Great post on the distinction between a running QB and a scrambler. Agree 100% that Marcel's strength is actually scrambling. Also we have to factor in that towards the end of last year, opposing DCs figured this out and started utilizing a spy to take away the QB scramble, forcing Marcel to read defenses in the passing game.
To make things worse we lost 4 offensive linemen, a 1st round WR, a 3rd round TE, our OC/QB coach and Leveon Moss from the 2025 season. We replaced our OC with the WR coach(never called plays) and our QB coach with an analyst. It's easy to see how Marcel would likely regress given the offensive staff and personnel around him also got worse(at least less experienced).
So while it's obvious Marcel is having some mental struggles with performance in the games this year it's also a structural issue around him that the head coach didn't properly assess when building his staff and roster for the 2026 season.
KC made up for alot Reeds problem. May not be on paper but he was one of the best we ever had. Even when he didn't get the ball the routes he ran affected the secondary enough to make a average WR like Craver look good. I figured when we didn't get a number 1 wr in the portal the offense would look like this. Horton was never someone who would make things easier for Reed.
