We never trailed in the game.

Game was weird as hell. We got beat in every statistal catagory other than turnovers.
And penalties. ASU was beating themselves most of the game.

We never trailed because they muffed a punt and we took an early lead.

Their QB threw for 254, 2/2 61.4 rating
ours threw for 163 yards 3/1 53.4 rating

I am glad Marcel went 3/1 over 2/2 but I doubt anyone watched that game and thought Reed was the better QB.

Their ground game went for 115 yards on 4.0 ypc, while we had 92 yards on 2.6 ypc. That is terrible for us.

Yes, we won the game - and you should never apologize for a win.

But looking forward from this game, we had 2 defensive TDs that were both somewhat freakish and unlikely to easily repeat week to week. We were gifted field position by a muffed punt and an idiotic fake punt, neither of which are easily repeatable.

So when I watch this game, I'm happy we won, stunned we covered easily, but worried looking forward because we won this game through means that are very hard to repeat week to week.

We gave up 189 yards receiving to a guy that is good, but probably not as good as many we'll see throughout the year.

My guess is that pretty much every predictive tool would take the stats from our game and give us a small win, based mostly on turnovers.

I'm not going to argue that we didn't deserve it or something asinine like that, but if we play like that every week - without the dumb plays by ASU and the 2 crazy interception return TDs - we are probably looking at a 7 win team. I think that is a fair criticism.

I'm having a hard time to come up with a team in the AP top 10 that couldn't be critiqued in the same way. Ohio St-can't hold a lead, Georgia-play somebody, Notre Dame-play somebody, Texas-if they continue to get slow start blah blah, Miami-play somebody, Indiana play somebody, Oregon-too easy, LSU-10-7 against La Tech at the half-seriously?, Ole Miss-if they play their SEC schedule like they played Louisville, 8-4 at best..that's just college football. Ask Oklahoma how a team can change from one week to the next.

Also, I will give Elko the benefit of the doubt when it comes to turnovers being repeatable. I'm not saying 4 every game but two of those turnovers were just absolute BAD *** plays by incredibly talented defensive players. That IS repeatable and a recipe for winning over the course of a season.

Reed needs long developing throwing plays to be successful which isn't sustainable since it relies on excellent oline play and great receivers. Theres a reason why we don't see slants down the middle, curl routes, and why redzone offense is shady with Reed and it comes down to accuracy.

This stuff is not unusual. Look back at some our old games with TCU. They would often have gaudy statistics against us and we beat them every year.

And I saw some outstanding ball hawking by the defense.

Enjoy the win and let Elko worry about this kind of stuff.
Bunk Moreland

After his years as DC and now as HC nobody should be surprised by how our games will go defensively.

We will be frustratingly simple and basic, but also very sound on defense in the 1st half and then adjust to their offense at halftime and usually figure them out in the 2h.

The offensive side of the ball is never going to be super aggressive or sped up because Elko knows grinding down the clock is a winning strategy. And when we aren't clicking from the jump, our own strategy reduces additional possession opportunities. OL has to get better. We've got to adjust our RB rotation. Then we'll be fine.

Reed is who he is. I think they have to keep him on the move. He is not a good drop back pocket passer. Every team we play will try to keep him in the pocket and make him beat them with his arm.

Stats here are deceiving as the numbers are skewed by the 2 pick sixes and which essentially gave them 2 more possessions to rack up offensive yards.

The eye test - ASU looked like the better team in the first half on both sides of the ball. However in their attempt to outplay A&M, they showed they did not have the depth to keep to that level of play.

It was a hard game to really gain much insight other than Reed is the least of the worry right now. The worry is why are the front lines outmatched in the first 20 plus minutes of each game against inferior opponents?

We had 3 no drives essentially. By that I mean the offense had no field or snaps to work with because either Arizona State gave us the ball inside the 10 or our defense took it away and turned it into 7 points and their offense was right back on the field . That definitely impacted our offensive opportunities but you'll take it every time and twice on Saturday . I'll admit the offense looked shaky when they did have opportunities but this did skew the stats some.

Their legal pic plays on offense were very effective and it took a long time for us to adjust . That I don't understand because I think it's a part of their offensive MO and we should have been better prepared for it.

There are an unusually large number of things that need to be corrected after a 4 TD victory over what was at least a decent opponent . Still, wer'e 2-0 and won by 28.

ASU WRs are great at setting that "pick" to get receivers open. Like a basketball team. Dilly obviously teaches and relies on that and it is very effective.

It is effective and it's smart football but Elko said in his post game we were playing a completely different defense in H2 from H1. It's good that we were able to adjust but I can't get away from the concept that we weren't really ready for it from the opening kickoff. Maybe they threw in some twists that we hadn't seen on film but we had to know the basic concepts they would use , didn't we?

I think we started running a lot more power/pulling players. With Reeds running ability and as good as Nabou is that should be a staple. I also think our backs are still figuring out how to read holes better.

You think they outplayed us but if we played like them we lose the game. They had 4 TOs and 9 penalties, we didn't. We didn't muff a punt return, or fail on a fake punt.

I don't think we got out played. I'm just pointing out that stats don't tell the whole story. Could our offense have looked better? Absolutely. Did our defense get gouged at times? Yup. We need to clean things up for sure. This game could have had 1st teamers watching the 4th quarter if we were more consistent

Then we had 2 pick sixes and a forced fumble in the 4th that took the gas out of them.

Our offense is worrisome.

Both sides of the ball are worrisome. They had multiple methodical drives where we just could not stop them. The turnovers were great and well timed, but we were in a dogfight going into the 4th.

We never trailed and doubled up the point spread. Some of you are just miserably pathetic people.
Did you even watch the game? Lol got outgained by 100 yards and looked pretty bad. You can't count on the opponent having muffed punt and 4 turnovers every game.

Not every team has a Searcy that blows up their line and hits the quarterback as he's throwing causing the ball to flare up in the air and then at the same time has a incredible athlete, such as a Marco Jones to have the wherewithal to see the ball and react quickly enough and athletically enough to get it secure it and track race to the end zone for a pick six. Not every team is gonna have that guy that jumps the screen on the outside and fights for the ball and is able to make that interception and run it back for six like Julio Humphrey did

Long story short, yes, we out Jimmy and Joe'd them

I'm not ready to say our offense is worrisome yet. I expected a slow start because I definitely think that Elko plays some gamemanship and it was inferior opponents that are out of conference. I think he wants to give away as little as possible since we have so many new changes such as a new offensive line, a new offensive coordinator that's never called plays before, a new quarterback coach, a new wide receiver coach and a new tight ends coach. I think if he can limit what he's showing before we go into SEC play, that's great. I expect to see an added wrinkle or two this week as we open up SEC play against Kentucky and I expect at least a couple if not more wrinkles to be brought into the game the following week in the Bayou.

These next two games are really gonna test our offensive line and we will have a better read on where we're at after that point

3 of the 4 TOs were directly caused by the defense. Fumble was because a defender punched it out. One of the interceptions was because QB was hit as he threw it, and the other the db jumped the route and took the ball from the receiver. Those weren't gifts from the offense. They were taken by the defense.

Outgaining your opponent by 100 is irrelevant if you are heavily penalized and turn the ball over. We played a cleaner game.

Even before we ran away with it on the 4th, we were consistently winning the field position battle. Our offense didn't look great, but our defense and special teams was able to help them out enough with field position to keep us in the lead.

Way too much is being made of the box score, IMO and it baffles me so many people are hyping up their QB so much, sure, he played fine, outside of throwing two pick sixes, but throwing two pick sixes is HORRIBLE.

In 2015, we lost to Bama by 18. Kyle Allen almost doubled up Bama's QB in passing yards. Allen finished with 263 passing yards and a touchdown. Bama's QB had 138 yards and no touchdowns. Allen also happened to throw three pick sixes...was anyone on here or Bama's board running to talk about how Allen outplayed their QB because he amassed more yards?

We never trailed ASU. From early in the second quarter onward, we led the entire game, and won by 28. Way too much negativity for a blowout win over a decent opponent, IMO.

Watching ASU against A&M reminded me of our 2011 Sherman team. We could look unstoppable in the first half, with even better execution than the ASU team, then somehow melt down in the second half in ways you didn't think were possible. Probably some adjustments and fatigue involved, but man, that felt familiar from the other side.

Most of ASU's pass plays were well conceived picks. Destroy a receiver or two coming across, take the penalty, and that would stop.
