That's kinda the point. Out coaching staff had no clue he was an nfl level talent at qb. If they thought that, no I would not play him at receiver. They did that because they did not think he was that kind of talent and thus weren't worried about him getting injured.

It all worked out, and I agree he was great at receiver. My only point was that it was somewhat concerning that they didn't realize the talent that they had.

He couldn't win the job over Jerrod, who was also a great talent until his shoulder injury.

Right but if you have an nfl talent as a backup, you aren't playing him at wr. Hes qb only. They clearly didn't realize what they had.

But no sense in beating a dead horse. It doesn't really matter bc it worked out.

They had him practice at QB all week prior to games, the only time he played WR was during pregame warm-up and during the game.

He was a freak natural athlete, and our coaches knew it.

You're basically castigating our coaches for recognizing they had a freak athlete on the roster, and putting the best 11 players on the field on offense.

Just say you didn't like Sherman or his staff, this passive-aggressive "I'm gonna find something to beech about regarding a former coach even if I have to make up a whole scenario in my head to be angry about" is asinine.

Just admit you're wrong. Jerrod was seen as the best QB by the staff (until he wasn't).
Credit to the staff for playing him at WR, they realized Tanny was a great athlete - too good to stay on the bench.

There's no better way to become an NFL quarterback than by transferring away from Texas A&M

People seem to forget Matt Joeckle, Kenny Hill, Nick Starkel, Zach Calzada, and Max Johnson exist. I'd say the success rate of guys who stay is similar, if not better than those who leave.

Haynes King suffered injuries and got passed up on the depth chart here. He was wise to leave, and most Aggies took joy in seeing him revive his career at GT.

Yep, Kyle Allen was a head scratcher. Got benched at UH and has played in League for years.

Kryler was the obvious one that got away but we have had a ton of QBs leave that didn't do much after they left at a high level.

wait why wouldn't you get him on the field? there was no question who the starter was, so if the coaches felt he could handle both responsibilities, which he clearly could and did, what's the problem with fielding your best players? we're not talking about a guy that might be good enough to see the field when you go 5 wr, he was arguably the best outside wr on the roster depending on how you feel about jeff fuller. the offense was unquestionably better with him on the field.

i think you might be trying to apply nfl roster management to a college roster and it's simply not the same thing… we're not talking about protecting a guy that you're expecting to lead a franchise for 15 years. college coaches rightfully should be in the business of winning college games. the risk of a freak injury somehow keeping your backup qb (who has all the potential in the world but still has proven nothing yet) from taking over the qb1 role in 1-2 years is outweighed by the reward of getting your #1 (2 at worst) wr on the field in the present.

and you don't even have to debate it in the abstract, it clearly was the right call- it worked. and it's hard to say the coaches didnt know what they had because they're on record discussing his potential.

this phenomenon isn't even unique to a&m… look at the most hyped qb maybe ever in manning being used as, in effect, a goal line back early on. and that wasn't nearly as needed as tannehill at wr. its not common to have a guy so capable at both qb and wr, but playing guys out of their natural position to get them on the field sooner is done all the time. no matter their nfl projection. college coaches that don't play their best players should probably have a backup career plan ready

Not to mention, Jerrod and Tannehill were BOTH playing WR at one point with McGee at QB.

Apparently, Sherman had two QB's in the QB room that he didn't know had any talent lol.

One is a QB coach in the NFL. The other had a long NFL career. And the guy in front of both of them was drafted and played multiple years in the NFL.

Yeah, they had no idea what they had on their hands. Just a bunch of receivers they got lucky with.

Jerrod was a WR until his senior year of high school, lots of talent but was very raw so can't put too much blame on Sherman with him.

If Jerrod doesn't have his shoulder screwed up by surgery, I'm still convinced he could've been a first round pick at QB.

He carried us for two years, and he was damn good at the end of the '09 season.

He was an accurate passer with a bazooka arm who could also make plays with his feet, he had it all. And then he had surgery and came back, and there was zero zip on the ball. Sad as hell, man.

I'm not sure about the bazooka arm part even before the injuries, not that it really matters now, but otherwise agreed. a lot of people forget because of the way it all fell apart when the shoulder was done for, but he was on track to enter the draft as a highly productive qb prospect with no major knocks on him-

he had nfl size, the accuracy, he could make all the throws, smart, made good decisions, a plus athlete for a pocket qb, and he was operating an nfl scheme and would have been about as pro ready as they come. with a little luck he could have been a top 5 pick, it was tough seeing injuries not just slow him down but take away his ability to even play the position at all. when the shoulder went, the decision making and pocket presence were right behind when it became clear he couldn't trust his arm anymore.

seems like coaching suits him well so that's a nice consolation prize at least

I really wanted HK to be successful at A&M. Hard to guess how much of his injuries with us were due to young, skinny qb vs. sec defenses or just dumb luck.

But I'm ecstatic for him that he found success at GT and now maybe in the NFL.

Back to HK, looks like he got nicked up on that last TD play. Hope it is not serious and he continues to get reps.

I mean yeah, Fisher is the biggest Aggie joke of all time. Is there something wrong with disliking the guy more than you love A&M.
