That's not based in fact at all. Ryan was such an athlete that he wanted to get on the field. He was not going to start at QB that year. He credited his time as WR a big reason as why he was able to win the starting job later.

He was such a natural athlete, he would practice with the QBs all week, then go over to the WRs and run drills with them during game day warmups. That is directly from Sherman himself.

He was put at WR because he was simply one of the best athletes on the team, and Sherman believed in putting the best 11 on the field.

I'll give it to Jimbo. He was super high on Haynes and saw the potential even though the rest of fan base was down on him. Injury was his biggest challenge his time here and what caused him to get jumped on depth chart

Yes, of all things the game seemed too big for him. Missed wide open receivers all game and in critical moments too. Sad that's his legacy here.

My thought (without looking into data) is that there probably isn't a best path. Given the set of active NFL quarterbacks in any year is maybe 32*3? (Assuming each team carries 3 QBs on an active roster)

If thats more or less the number there are only 96 people in the world who are current NFL quarterbacks give or take.

32 of them would be QB1. I may be wrong, but I doubt any school or program has a preponderance of "producing" NFL quarterbacks.

As for the topic here, while I'm happy Haynes King showed well in the HOF game, and I hope he finds a way to have an NFL career, I guess I don't read TOO much into the HOF game....

I think playing under Ryan Day at Ohio State is a good choice. The last three Ohio State guys in Justin Fields, Will Howard and CJ Stroud all are on NFL rosters, and Julian Sayin seems to be another NFLer. Also, I think playing for Sark is not a bad move either. He has had Mac Jones and Tua while at Alabama, while not stars Ehlinger and Ewers are in the NFL and Manning will be a high pick. Last one would be playing QB at Oregon under Lanning. Nix, Gabriel and now Dante Moore are all NFLers.

And also, what happens when you don't freak out said high QB by bringing in an illusionist that completely freaks him out and causes a meltdown that lasts all season.

If you are talking about Tannehill, you are wrong. He was QB2 behind Jerrod Johnson, but the talent level of the roster was so down that Mike Sherman asked him to play WR so he could get on the field and help the team. But Sherman said that Ryan WOULD be our QB after JJ and also stated he would be an NFL QB one day. He knew what he was talking about and was an excellent evaluator and developed of talent.

King wasn't ready when he played and then the injuries set him back. Very few FR or RS FR QBs are ready to play and any good, even still today. Wish he had stayed but was best for him to xfer.

All the self loathing on this thread cracks me up. Why is it so hard for many Ags to give props to a former player without having to throw the school they support under the bus at the same time?

Yeah, Ohio State might be the worst example out there. They're notorious for creating draft busts at QB. Will Howard was a game manager at Ohio State for only one season, he was developed at K-State. Fields is a notorious NFL bust, and Stroud melted down last season, so the jury is still out on him.

You're assuming they're Aggies.

I don't think that's true. Tannehill was athletic enough to be able to play WR while biding his time to start at QB. It wasn't because staff didn't think he was good enough to play QB and moved him to WR.
