To those who watch the FTAB closely, the baritones the band marches with appear to be antiques. There is presently a campaign ongoing to pay the approximately $100,000 it will take to replace them.

Consider throwing a few extra bucks you may have to this campaign. See details from Phil below:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Howdy Ags,

The FTAB routinely replaces a few horns and woodwinds from various instrument sections on a yearly basis. However, this year they have 30 baritones that are quite old and well beyond their useful life. Further repair is both expensive and untenable due to the age and condition of the instruments. The cost for replacement is approximately $100,000…. or about $3300 each.

Due to the large scope of this need, the directors approached the TABA in late December asking for financial assistance, with the goal to have the baritones available and ready for use at the beginning of the upcoming 2026 fall football season. The TABA officers and board members convened on January 9, and voted to contribute $25,000 from our general fund for the new baritones. We have also had an extremely generous donation from another former bandsman that will go directly towards this replacement campaign.

Earlier this month, Dr. Tim Rhea had two different makers of baritones ship sample instruments for the band to try out. After the directors evaluated them, and a few of the baritone players tested them, the decision was made to order 30 baritones this month.

If you would like to make a one time contribution and have 100% of your gift go to this baritone replacement campaign, we now have it set up at member.tabaonline.com to do exactly that. It's simple, click on the link, go to the "Membership & Gifts" header, and click on "Special Purpose Gift". Type in your email address and follow the instructions from there. You do not have to be an active TABA member to make this one time donation.

If you prefer to make a donation by written check, please include a note stating it is for the "Baritone Replacement Campaign". Then mail to:

Texas Aggie Band Association
1507 S. College Ave.
Bryan, TX 77801-1214

Please consider getting behind and supporting this organization that means so much to so many! The more financial assistance we can provide for the replacement of this large number of baritones, the more the band can utilize what they have budgeted towards the normal yearly replacement and repair, of all the different instruments, throughout the band.

Thank you. And Gig'em!

We have a university that gouges nearly 80,000 kids millions of dollars every semester. I'm sure they can throw a pittance of 10k to the band. Thats a tip compared to what they give football players

The Athletic Department should be providing full financial support to the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band.

Get NIL money for the baritones. They perform better than most players.

First, money for new Baritones is a good cause and the instruments last for many years. Other departments don't like sharing their money so this is mostly on supporters of the FTAB.

Now, about those concessions prices. Holy smokes, Kyle Field has to lead the SEC or maybe the Nation in most expensive concession. Home of the $11 fountain soda and $9 ice cold Aggie dog. $15 beer sounds right. I have been to a lot of pro and college stadiums and we beat them all in price gauging. Where does the concession money go? The Jimbo buy out? Sadly, the little school up the road in Austin at the game last year sold soda at $3 and hot dogs for $3 and they are actually warm.

Ask Elko. That's a practice worth of cash from his new contract.

If you don't attend games, you wouldn't even know we still have a band.

What on earth are you talking about? They perform in many parades and other venues during the Spring Semester. If you are not aware of that, that's on you.

I'm guessing he means how you can't hardly hear them on TV.

But I will say that I really enjoyed getting to watch every halftime drill at Kyle Field this year from my couch with SEC+.

Do we really need those? They look stupid. For $100K I think we could get something that looks a lot cooler for the BQs

Nobody helped me buy a baritone. God forbid kids these days get a job to buy their baritone like I did. (Im just kidding I would have used my money to buy something cool like a guitar or 100 tacos for $100).

Iirc we did march with that kind of baritone for a while, but I thought we used a marching version more recently.

Sort of like the difference between a tuba and sousaphone. But it looks more like a trumpet in the sense it plays forward from the back.

I'm sure a helpful present or former FTAB band member can also address how using especially band-provided larger instruments improves the quality of the sound.

The idea that corporate sponsors could help out implies some form of advertising since just highlighting the band itself isn't something we can easily sell off. Though I guess selling out is what most people think
NIL is about. Since the schools sold the athletes and their fans as product, though…who was sold out and who packaged?

Drum and bugel corps use something like this:

But, the old school college bands still use the traditional form, as above.

For those not musically inclined, the baritone plays in the same range as a trombone, but uses valves rather than a slide.

Someone get Brewer out of retirement to do instrument repairs. First time I met him he was blowing cigarette smoke through a clarinet checking for leaks.
