Him and Kennedy were both pretty far down the depth chart. Probably wouldn't see much time at all next season either. Need to improve our talent across the board. Good luck to them.

Kennedy is slightly surprising but again, only slightly.

We plan to attack the portal hard at dl and they knew it

Marco Jones was getting more snaps than both the last month of the season. Elko is very high on Tristen Givens so I expect him to be playing early.

They may just be negotiating

He had 13 tackles as a backup DE, Howell had 31 and Kennedy is arguably the best athlete on the team.

He's worth a shot. He could break out

If we weren't shooting for higher, we'd have offered him more incentive to stay.

Hes testing the waters because he likely believes when it all shakes out he will be our 4th, 5th, or even 6th de next year

It would be a good thing if he left.

Right now I think we do what A&M does best and reward him for being mediocre with lots of money. Then, next year the schedule is much harder and we are back to being 8 win A&M. We might even slip to 7 since we lose one of our 3 "automatic" wins we buy every year.

This has Elijah Robinson written all over it. Look at our DL when he was here. We had Leal and Clemons playing SDE at 275/280 lbs not DEs at 250/260. Our rush DEs were also considerably heavier than what we've been doing the last couple of seasons.

In general, Elko plays two very different DEs. A 5 tech that has played anywhere from 260(Hayes, Clemons, Searcy) to 290 (leal, Stewart, Turner). He plays a hybrid edge that has played anywhere from 6-4 247 (Johnson), 6-5 270 (Clemons in certain sets), 6-2 250 (Howell), 6-3 255 (Durham), and Scourton 6-4 285,

But most are still going to be 240-260 in that hybrid edge role. We may go bigger at times with a Marco jones at 6-5 265/270 ish. But don't be surprised if our starting hybrid end is a 6-4 255 type and we maybe try to go back to that 275+ 5 tech instead of the smaller 260 guys we play this year. More due to necessity of what we could find in the portal than ideal from elkos scheme

That said Kennedy was 239, so still on the small end. But this isn't really what is happening. He isn't a physical enough presence in the in game like a Durham, or even tyree Johnson who was 6-4 247.

I agree with everything you're saying. I said similar thing in the other portal thread. Kennedy is in year 3 and still in the 230s. His a situational guy and not big enough to be an every down type. I think we're trying beef up the DL going forward. I really like Kennedys motor and hope we ultimately keep him. But I'm guessing he might also have been told to add several pounds or risk not seeing the field
