The most important job for a head coach imo is the identification of good assistants. I think that's where Elko has been lacking the most, with Bateman and our special teams coordinator. We will see what happens with Wiggins but in my opinion it's too much of a risk at our level.

If I were hiring an OC, I would calculate the EPA above opponents' average surrendered EPA by team (i.e. down in down out basis of how you are exploiting a defense), divide that by the star rating of players on offense, with more weight for the skill players, and rank the teams. That way you try to identify who does the most with the least. Obviously you need to consider recruiting acumen too but considering who maximizes what they have I believe would scale.

That is what Cignetti has done well at IU. Getting the most out of what he has, and making sure they are disciplined. I hope Elko can do that too moving forward.

No one leaves Cignetti's staff…esp OC and DC who have been w him for years. They don't aspire to move to HC jobs as they are tied to Cignetti's hip.

All other OCs and DCs want a HC jobs and probably think they can or would do things differently than HC they are employed by.

If Elko shows up next season 50lbs lighter, Id have a lot more respect. Show some self discipline. Its not about having the time to work out, its about spending less time stuffing his face.
