come season's end, it didn't matter if it was miami, bama or nd. all would have come into kyle and beaten our pedestrian offense.

and had we been seeded even one spot higher we'd still be playing as we could have also crushed either tulane or jmu. that's why the choke job against the sips sucked especially bad.

I will concede we were better than I thought we would be but just barely above average and couldn't take advantage of the schedule unexpectedly unfolding to give us a break with a down l$u and a lucky win on the road against nd in the opener. coin flip wins against arkie, auburn and even unexpectedly down s-car, tell you more about the true nature of this team. lose even one of those coin flips and the committee might have had their excuse to keep us out of the playoffs altogether.

would have all come to an end next week any way (unless we'd gotten the 5 seed. I'd rate the game against tech a toss-up). But georgia, indy, ohio-st (maybe ole miss / oregon) are all clearly better than us. we were just pretenders who got to hang around a little longer than the host of other pretenders. (but not quite as long as co-pretender Miami due to our pretender qb being exposed for the 2nd straight game (not to mention the 1st half against s-car.))

the offseason motto was "finish" and the sad truth is despite that beautiful and fortunate 11-0 start, this years team… like the year's before… didn't FINISH!

doubt the new oc is any better and the OL probably takes a step back even from this bunch. kc was special and he'll be gone. think reed is probably at his ceiling and we won't have the stones to upgrade. so no improvement from the current level of "just above average" that likely won't see a repeat of the golden opportunity this season presented that gave this season's rendition of "same old, same old" a shot of steroids.

final prognostication (and the safest you can always offer when it comes to Aggie football)… "wait 'til next year"… when we see a lot more "same old, same old".

if it was going to happen, this year was the year. not that its a secret, but we have LSU, BAMA, TENN, OU, and TEX on our schedule next year. I dont think we lose all those games, but we absolutely could and finish 7-5. yikes....

5-7 if we stay with Reed…. Tough schedule and first time coordinators is a terrible decision to just promote..!

I think I'm going to go with 9-3

Losses at LSU (I'd imagine Kiffin will have them ready for that one), and Alabama. Then lose one of the home games against Tennessee or Texas

No idea because of who we are losing and the portal.

I'm waiting to see exactly who we lose and who we add.

Need to have a good season obviously, but beating sip is a must too. Year 3 and at home, it's time.

This is the only valid answer. There is just no way to know how good any of these teams will be.

Per 2025 Sagarin Power Rankings:

in 2025, we played 6 teams in the top 30, 1 (ND) being in the top 10.

In 2026, we will play 7 teams in the top 30, 1 (Bama) being in the top 10.

Yes the SEC schedule will be more difficult, but the overall schedule strength isn't that much different in 2026.

Also out of the five SEC CFP teams, A&M's schedule strength was better than Georgia and OleMiss.

And next season's tougher schedule is not a one off. The current 9 game SEC rotation will lock us into the 7 or 8 win ceiling for all eternity. We have an endowed chair reserved at the kiddie table.

Floor of 7-5 (6-1 home and 1-4 away) and ceiling of 10-2 (7-0 home and 3-2 away). My early 2026 forecast is 9-3 (7-0 home and 2-3 away) with road losses to LSU, Alabama, and Oklahoma.

Tougher schedule, by far. Revamped LSU, OU, Bama, Tennessee, on the schedule. Texas, will likely be better. Next year, might be a good year to reflect, on this years record.

Not only who we lose/add, but also who each of our opponents lose/add.

I don't like breaking in a whole new offensive line. Then again with all their mental errors down the stretch it may not be much different.

Ceiling of 9-3 in all likelihood.
Floor could be as bad as 7-5.

Question for somebody not around yet (born in 1993)

If we had beaten ND in the 1992 cotton bowl would we have won (or been able to claim) a national title? #4 headed into that game and would have beaten #5 ND to finish undefeated

If the Miami-Alabama Sugar Bowl had ended in an ugly, error-filled tie and we had beaten ND, then there could have been an argument made for us winning a MNC. Outside of that, we pretty much had no shot regardless of the Cotton Bowl outcome.

As far as making a claim, if we had won that Cotton Bowl, I guess we could have. I don't know if Penn State claims one for 1994 when they finished undefeated but was not seriously considered for a title after Nebraska won the Orange Bowl.

didn't say it was. this year was lightning in a bottle with favorable schedule development, winning more than our fair share of coin flip games in conference and a relatively experienced team with a couple of special players like kc and cashius.

"same old, same old" for next year is an argument for regression to the mean. i think this year will compare to 2012 as a relative peak with similar drop off afterwards.

Impossible to project right now but in order to even have a chance at the playoff we need elite portal in moves at

WR
T
G
DT
DE
LB
CB

Then need to supplement those with adding more experience across the board too. Im not even bother suggesting QB because its probably not realistic to land a big fish but Reed had at the very least better get some real QB coaching work in the offseason and a real staff QB Coach for the year.

You started off with a fairly legit perspective but eventually turned it over to Nancy. lol

Year 1 - We were waiting for the shoe to drop on a Portal Defense and undisciplined 5 star pass rushers. Absolutely no surprise when it finally caught up mid-late season. This year's defense was much improved due to Elko taking over. He continues to upgrade to "finishing" type players you reference.. At the same time he's changing to like minded coaches. When I say continue, I mean in his 2nd year.

Year 2 - Offense was a concern most of the season, just wanted them to play 4 qtrs... By late season all our flaws had been exposed. Elko's 1st recruits were freshmen, plus some great transfers. I enjoyed winning 11 games in Year 2.. A&M's complete football program overhaul is staying ahead of schedule..

"wait 'til next year" ? DUH Year 1, Year 2, Year 3... I know you kids don't understand what building anything is about but "oh you're not a kid"?, then post like it! 24 months ago we were a "Dumpster Fire Program"! Elko came in scrambling for Coaches & Portal Transfers. 24 months later you're whining because we're 8-5 and 11-2..

I think with next year's schedule , this year's team would've been a 3 loss team. I don't see us being as talented next year and having two new coordinators won't help matters.
Reed should be a better but I don't think the protection will be as good for him or the running game. I say realistically next year is an 8-4 regular season and a mid level bowl appearance
7-5 is more realistic than 10-2 or better.

Missed opportunity this year to make real noise (with OL exper returning), but signs were there all along with inability to stop the run (all season long) with USCe 1st half showing the true weakness of this team. tu loss was still the colossal eff up that proved this team was a paper tiger, and QB didn't know how to read zone (and LOS was porous).

Need so much at OL and DL IMO that just don't see how they can even come close next year (esp w tougher sched). Doesn't matter if they pull 4 top OL out of the portal, it takes time to gel and figure out scheme/QB/play calling, etc.

tu will be the largest spender in the portal as they are going all in to win it next year w Arch (and Arch reducing his NIL by %50 I've read to help attract/pay talent to win it all). tu's OL was very young this year and still beat our DL in the 2nd half.

LSU will be better under Kiffin (and an away game), OU had a very young OL (who will be better next year), @ Bama, Tenn offense, @ USCe (should always be a win for us, but Elko struggles vs. Beamer and USCe has brought back the main impact players), etc.

Hoping for 9 wins, but think we'll struggle to get to 7 wins best case scenario at the moment.

One thing we do know. Is we are going to get to see what Coach Elko can do with a SEC schedule thats average. Hes going to face around 3 or 4 opponents that are playoff bound.

In 2024 he faced two. One was non conference (Notre dame) and the other ut-Austin

In 2025 he faced zero

Gotta see how the portal shakes out but as noted, the schedule next year is brutal

Reeds progress seems to be a paper tiger and he still plays terribly when there's even the slightest pressure or spotlight on him. The decision to promote a guy who has never been a head coordinator is mind boggling.

So between an unforgiving schedule and our usual stupid organization decisions, we could very easily lose 5 games next year.

Our only hope is having a miraculously good portal season and we actually have a QB competition with the guy we get through it . Otherwise helllllo PopTart Bowl
