People keep saying Miami is playing sooooo grrrreeeeeaaaattt.
The combined record of the teams they played since SMU is.
21-27.
Along with this excellent post, here are the total defense rankings of the last 4 teams Miami has played:
Syracuse: 130
NC State: 92
VTech: 106
Pitt: 71
Outside of Notre Dame (in August) they haven't played a top 30 defense this year. The next best defense they faced was SMU, then Louisville. Every other defense they have played have been 40th or worse.
Against every defense they played ranked under 50 (4 teams: ND, SMU, Lville, FSU), they didn't crack 30 points a single time. In those games, they only had more than 350 total yards once. Against SMU (388).
But Miamis has a top-10 defense, you say! Let's look at the total offense ratings of the teams they played in the last 4 games:
Syracuse: 118
NC State: 47
VTech: 114
Pitt: 17
They did play #2 USF three months ago, but they have t exactly been facing a murderers row of offensive fire power.
So when we talk about the last month of Miami's schedule, let's make sure we talk about the quality of teams they have played. Again, I'm not saying the Ags are going to blow them out. I'm not even saying the Ags will win.
All I'm asking is, why does everybody play up Miami's success against weak teams while hand-waving away losses, but then say that the last two quarters of the game against the #13 team in the country that hadn't lost at home all season defines the entire Aggie football season?
