The College Football Team Running the TableWith a Quarterback Who Couldn't Throw
Marcel Reed became Texas A&M's starter due to his electrifying ability with his legs. But he has them in the national championship hunt because of the improvements he's made with his arm.
Quote:
He was named Tennessee's Mr. Football after rushing for over 2,200 yards in high school. In his breakout appearance for Texas A&M, he ran all over LSU, finishing the game with more rushing touchdowns than completions. But Reed and his coaches knew that he needed something more if he was going to be the quarterback to lead the Aggies into the College Football Playoff.
Reed would have to learn how to throw.
It's a skill that didn't come as naturally to him. His timing was off and his mechanics were wonky. In high school, Reed only completed 56% of his passes. But to anyone who watched him in his native Nashville, it almost didn't matter. Reed could always use his legs to make up for his armeven if it stretched the definition of what it meant to be a signal-caller.
"You could call me a running quarterback," he said. "It still has 'quarterback' in it."
At Texas A&M, Reid paired up with an offensive coordinator who took a similarly unconventional approach to the position. Collin Klein was a dominant runner at Kansas State who still holds the college record for most carries by a quarterback in a season. The risk for Reed, however, was coming off as one-dimensional.
So last summer, Klein encouraged Reed to get in touch with someone who knew all about developing a true dual-threat quarterback into a prolific passer: Patrick Mahomes's throwing coach, Jeff Christensen.
