There is nothing wrong with rooting for a school you didn't attend, but nonstop trash talking and completely unwarranted sense of elitism all because of a $10 dollar t-shirt baffles me.

I have no issues with t-shirt fans. They help fund a sport I love.

Trash talking is what makes college football what it is.

For some, it is all they have.

Ignore them. They are worried we are going to come empty out their stadium like we have been doing to everybody else. That's why they are selling so many tickets.

I have studied ball closely for 5 decades and am convinced they are getting their ass whipped Friday night.

It's much easier to claim affiliation with an organization you could never qualify to be a part of than it is to do the work to earn membership.

I'm convinced that deep down, all these mouth breathers know it and they get proactively defensive about it.

Bring it up. It shuts them down 100% of the time.

My SWT grad niece married a sip, and so did our good friend next door neighbor. You'd swear they were both dodging Whitman's bullets once upon a time. I have to tolerate the niece tomorrow.

One of the 10 Commandments of SEC Football is: Thou shall not trash sidewalk alumni.

They are generally less fortunate than actual alumni and usually they mean things in good fun.

Like any group, some are a--holes and some just like that team. However, the most obnoxious Horns fans I know are t-shirt fans. One in particular gave me grief until (years ago) I dropped the old "difference between Sip fans and Aggies - Aggies went to A&M and the Sips went to Walmart". Since then, when he starts, I will either mention Walmart, or the school he went to... and it stops.

ETA: He was also one of the most butthurt about the "disrespect" of the horns down gesture.

Tshirt fans may be the biggest winners as the "college" football landscape shifts further and further away from an academic basis with students athletes.

There is no longer a degree or school attendance that hoity-toity college grads can hold over their heads.

Many of these fans (most) come from very poor, rural communities with very little success of any kind. Many of them obviously yearn for a more lavish or prestigious life but are simply unable to accomplish this. They see the school in Austin, with prestige in sports and academics with an ivy school like vibe. They subconsciously see this as a club they can join and a badge of honor or feather in their cap. By being a fan they get to say "we" longhorns this and that. They finally get to feel a sense prestige in their lowly lives. Of course, the irony is that if they were to walk on that campus and express any of their beliefs, they'd be met with flying dldos and libs shouting for them to leave. Not realizing the TAMU is the exact cultural embodiment of Texas and genuinely so, organically. The school in Austin is a like a cheap knockoff designed by a marketing firm of outsider Texas cliches in the most unTexan like city with some of the most unTexan like students.

Because putting on that orange t-shirt makes them feel like Superman instead of Pee Wee Herman....

Resale shops, $1 regular days, 3 for a dollar on discount days.

We is their favorite word. My response is always, "Who is we? Did you go to school there?" Usually works pretty good.

I typically don't mind until they start running academics smack. Like comparing US News rankings. For schools they could never qualify for.

"We" is a fun word. Not sure where to draw the line on who gets to use it.

I didn't put ANY time or effort into this team's success. I use "we" while acknowledging this fact. "We" is what makes sports fun and feel personal.

I use "we" regarding my Premier League team too. It just got to the point where I talk to so many "who is we" people I realized life's too short. Use "we". It's a lot of fun.

Classic overcompensation that just became their normal routine. They don't have anything to connect them with the school other than their obsession to identify with what they perceive as a winner.

It is just hilarious when you ask them when they went there or when did you graduate from there and they say "oh, I didn't go there, I graduated from the university of houston (whatever school they say).....and then I go "BWBWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

Because they have it in their tiny brains that they're an elite program with a storied past, but they only managed to win 4 BigXII titles in 26 years and ONE NC in the past 55 years.

They're "slightly" above average, at best.

I've seen large racks of horn shirts on sale typically after they lose. Walmart is cheaper, Academy a little more.
