There are two teams in the entire country we could play this weekend that would help us and I don't think either want to play us.

So, who are you suggesting we play?

Schedules are set years ahead. You can't decide today. Why schedule an FCS team?

It diminishes us about as much as a bye week.

I think this is always a silly argument.

Week 2 Ohio state played Ohio and Indiana played Indiana state. We played at Notre dame.

Did that diminish them?

Basically a late season bye and scrimmage for back ups and walk-ons.

Asking why play Samford is like asking why play any team outside the Power 4: we do that just like everyone does, because we need seven home games, and it gives guys down low on the depth chart a chance to play.

As to why we are playing them now, in November, the answer is that ESPN wants conference games in September. If all these games were played before conference play starts, there would be weekends in September with no good games for ESPN.

I can think of 550,000 reasons Samford "volunteered" to play A&M.

These P4 vs FCS need to be eliminated.
Your opponents should all be FBS opponents.

And pretty much everyone schedules them.

So we can fund their program after stealing their round ball coach.

Because for a long time, these schools were scheduled to "spread the wealth" and are paid 1-2 million to play the P5 teams. It pays for scholarships and the entire football program for some.

It is a away of supporting athletes and paying for the education of many athletes at these schools.

No one likes playing these games or watching them, but there were meant to serve as scrimmages to prepare the team for conference games but also help other programs bc of how much money these bigger schools make.

Logically these games are all in Sept. But then Sept became a boring month for football and wasn't bringing money/viewers until the conference matchups started.

The SEC has always had one cupcake randomly later in the season and didn't schedule them all before conference play.

Nick Saban used to be very vocal about not scheduling these types of games, but of course, I didn't see him dishing out any cash to these schools from his massive salary, or any other coach for that matter.

It would be nice if we played small Texas schools to keep the money local.

The SEC has a long rooted tradition of playing regional FCS opponents since before the modern era.

It's not as bad as when a team plays San Jose State ( school with half a stadium), UTEP and Sam Houston in the SAME season.

We play in the SEC. Our worst teams are middle of the pack or better in every other conference.
And that's all to say about that…

Funny that people seem to forget we play this (type of) game every year. Last year is was New Mexico State.

We could schedule nothing but top five OoC games. We'd still be ranked third because voters are idiots.

So, what does it matter? The path to the NC is still through winning.

Committee does not care about strength of schedule. Might as well play all "Samfords" OOC.

I think with the move to 9 conference games, the SEC will have to get away from playing a FCS/I-AA school each year. I get why we do it - it helps the smaller programs, gives your backups some reps, let's your injured heal their bumps and bruises, etc.

Here's what everyone in the SEC did this year, FCS-wise. 15 of the 16 SEC schools played an FCS team this year...only Texas did not.

Aug. 30 - Alabama A&M at Arkansas
Aug. 30 - Long Island at Florida
Aug. 30 - Central Arkansas at Missouri
Aug. 30 - Illinois State at Oklahoma
Aug. 30 - Charleston Southern at Vanderbilt

Sept. 6 - Austin Peay at Georgia
Sept. 6 - South Carolina State at South Carolina
Sept. 6 - East Tennessee State at Tennessee

Sept. 13 - Alcorn State at Mississippi State

Sept. 20 - Southeastern Louisiana at LSU

Nov. 8 - The Citadel at Ole Miss

Nov. 15 - Tennessee Tech at Kentucky

Nov. 22 - Eastern Illinois at Alabama
Nov. 22 - Mercer at Auburn
Nov. 22 - Samford at Texas A&M

Not too many FBS teams schedule the "Top Tier" FCS teams (NDSU, SDSU, etc.).
Especially since NDSU had a, "rather substantial" winning streak versus FBS teams a few years ago.

Yes, or pay an A&M System school like Tarleton State.

We were scheduled to play Tarleton in 2026, but that game has been cancelled.
