More interestingly is he negotiated his buyout from $49M over 6 years to just $9M! Wow what a huge coup for PSU.

Who are some good examples of coaches that were fired from fairly high profile programs for performance who then went on to be successful at another top 30ish school?

Houston Nutt did ok at Ole Miss for a minute. Bobby Petrino did ok with his second coming at Louisville before being run off. Lane Kiffin since being bounced from USC years ago. Thought he was going to be the next coach after Saban left. I'm sure there are others.
When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say.

Kiffin is a great example.

Petrino was not fired from Arkansas for performance.

On the fence with Nutt. He started with a couple of nice seasons, then collapsed.

I disagree with those of you saying Franklin is a good hire. He is mediocre.

Penn State actually had better win % the 9 years prior to Franklin (including some years right after scandal where players left) and better record 50 years prior to Franklin. Not like he turned around anything.

What better coach do you think VT could have hired?

You literally could probably throw a dart and get a better coach.

Yes, I am bitter. PSU my 2nd fav school behind A&M. Don't worry A&M always my favorite. (I graduated A&M and got masters at Penn State.) About 90% of Penn State fans are so happy he is gone. That should tell you something.

Pretty good recruiter but always had to have best talent to win games. Terrible in-game coach.

In the acc it's not hard to amass more talent than most of your opponents

I think Franklin will do well there by vtech standards

It can't be underestimated how big this is for PSU. This is a game changer in terms of giving them back resources to invest in the program.

Maybe he'll end up at West Viginia in a couple years

Speaking of other longtime coaches that are available, any speculation where Gumby ends up?
He had OSU overperform their weight class for a long time until NIL and no T Boone did that program in.

Well... Elko hasn't specifically said he's not taking the VT job...

Somebody's gonna get a really good coach.

He'd be a great/dangerous fit at Auburn

Step down for him, step up for Va Tech.

I know that's the perception, but I would honestly prefer to be associated with one of of only two Public Senior Military Colleges (VT, A&M is the other) than with a a school known for pedos.

Franklin certainly didn't exceed the other coaching decades of JoePa. The last decade of JoePa was the worst and included some scandal years where they lost players.

You are correct that Franklin did decent but some are acting like he turned the program around which is simply not true.

You might be right. I do think Franklin recruits well. I just think he is a terrible in-game coach.

And I still think it is funny that Brent Pry worked under Franklin for 11 years. He was a disaster of a coach at Va Tech so then they hire Franklin.
