The announcer made it sound like you can't take your hand knock someone down to the ground.

We have been called for this several times this year. Am I missing something? Is there a rule against it?

I am frustrated, but maybe there is something I am missing!

The announcer was correct in that that wasn't holding. The dumbass analyst on the other hand was completely wrong and full of ***** That was a bs call by the refs.

I have never seen a holding call on a play like that. Interesting to say the least. Learned something new today

Bisontis' strength works against him sometimes. He gets holding calls from manhandling the DL on hand slaps and knockdowns

Holding rules when you get away with it

If Bisontis grabs him by his arms, and yanks him down, it's holding. That is also something that didn't happen. He chopped the guys arms, and the guy was just a weak as baby.

DL's "technique" is to grab the OL's jersey sleeves and put all of his weight leaning forward with arms extended. When Bisontis chops his arms, the DL no longer has anyone "holding him up" and he falls flat on his face. It's a quick move and if the Umpire or the Referee aren't paying attention, it *could* look like the OL pulled the DL down.

The question is...how do you prevent that holding call from being made if that's the way the DL plays?

Holding is like targeting:

It's whatever the refs think it is

Also, that wasn't holding

It looked like the flag came from behind the defender so there is no way the official could have had a good angle on the play.

Could it also be that the defensive player fakes getting pushed down to make it look like he was tackled ?

Holding is like targeting.

It all depends on what helmet you wear.

I think targeting is usually pretty clear once you actually learn the rules.

This particular holding call on Bisintis, imho, is the result of the umpire thinking he saw something he didn't. From behind it could like Bisontis grabbed the defender and pulled him forward onto his face. That's a common move that they watch for. But from a better angle you can see that's not what happened.

It's called a "snatch trap" or "splash" technique. It's clearly not a hold when viewed on film, but in the moment refs are notorious for calling o-linemen for holding on this type of play.

I was in the southwest corner and saw the "holding" and the flag and knew it was coming back immediately. Terrible call that negated a play that would have vaulted Marcel even higher in the Heisman race, and would have iced the game.

Bisontis has played like a top 10 draft pick this year IMO

If memory serves, a similar bogus hold took away Marcel's long TD run against the Hogs. I don't recall who it was called on.

The likelihood of a holding penalty being called is directly proportional to the yards gained.

If an offensive lineman is wearing a helmet that references A&M or Aggies, then they are holding

If the offensive lineman is wearing a non A&M/Aggies helmet, it is not holding.

Thanks to op for starting this discussion. Bisontis is the main one and maybe the one who gets called for this. Many times I have shouted at my tv that having a defensive lineman fall down at your feet is not holding. The penalty call always negates a big play because it takes the dl out of the play at what is usually an important point in the play.

I am sure the refs for the tu game are being coached on this point as we speak. Have your flag ready for when that ol does a face plant, because that's holding. When that ol goes down, your flag should come out.

Count on at least two and maybe three of those calls being made in the tu game.

The bigger problem is who called it which was the back judge. Thats not even his responsibility

Call me paranoid, but it always seems we get holding calls at the most inopportune times. Conversely, when we're on defense, most holding calls are on plays
that don't really affect the game.

You see this quite often when a ball carrier gets past a defender being blocked. Defenders will often turn their body to the side, keeping one arm engaged and then make it look like they can't advance with the ball carrier.

It's honestly amazing how often rules analysts are wrong. Im guessing they're not paying attention most of the time and have to come up with something on the spot.

I wonder how many bad calls there are going to be in Austin.

I'm anticipating one of the most lopsided officiated games in recent history.

Agreed. That analyst has never seen a call made on the field that he disagrees with.

Strength is a legitimate advantage. The umpire assumed something instead of actually seeing the play.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

it's easy

if it's our player doing it, it's most definitely a hold.
if it's our opponent, it's subjective.

and if it's t.u. doing it, it's likely not a hold at all

That's 2 terrible holding calls this year that called back long Marcel TD runs at critical times in the game. Literally taking away from Heisman type highlights in which he takes the lead or seals the game with his legs.

Such a shame the refs in the SEC suck so bad
Gyles Marrett
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you watch the replay that back judge just wanted to throw a flag, he looks away from Bisontis before the defender even his the ground, starts reaching for his flag and then looks over and sees the DL on the ground and throws it. That flag was coming out 100% chance on someone somewhere.

Officials can damn near call holding on every play and pick and choose when to do so. What's absurd is he chose to do so on something for once that wasn't even holding.

If you take away the bs holding call on marcell's TD run at arky and this one I think he's got a firm grasp on the Heisman.

It was called for the same thing in the ND game.
