I saw that Tech is now pushing Jacob Rodriguez for Heisman consideration and my immediate response was to ridicule. He's a great player with a great story having a great year, but my thought was that a defensive player would have to be truly next level in order to merit consideration. I think that Manti Teo was the last defensive player to get serious consideration so I looked up stats to support my point and was shocked at how ordinary they were. Other than making seven interceptions that year, his stats were considerably down from his excellent junior season. Yet, he won every defensive post season award that year. What a tragedy it would have been if that relentless PR campaign had been successful!
So, good luck to Jacob Rodriguez. I hope he gets all the recognition he deserves, and my bad for thinking that a defensive player would be foolish to aspire for that trip to New York. Lesser players have reached for the stars. Why shouldn't he?
