There's no way given that Rhule and Lashlee are now getting raises that we wouldn't be working on something for Elko now. Again, don't be stupid with the terms, but definitely be working on something to at least show good faith. Cowgirls have been doing this with Dak for years and always overpay by waiting. I suspect the same in this scenario before all these new ridiculous comps start happening at UF, L$U, and PSU

Because others schools that really want our coach will offer him guaranteed money AND incentives.

If Elko is one of the best coaches in the country (and it's looking like he is) then he is going to get one of the best contracts too

And all that could be anticipated and structured in to the contract.

I always get a chuckle out of these types of comments. Yes, let's give the man a raise because so far, he has ZERO SEC or national championships to his name. He lost 5 games last year and could just as easily lose 5 games next year. I swear some of you must be socialist because you love spending other people's money. I am betting that none of you are willing to write him a multimillion-dollar check but hey as long as somebody else does that's ok right?

For now, let's see how the season pans out. If Elko decides to leave for more money elsewhere then he never really wanted to be here and was just looking at us as a steppingstone to his next gig. And before anybody says crap, I really want you to think what can he do with 10mm per year that he cannot do with his current salary? He already has more money than he will ever spend so money should not be his deciding factor it should be wanting to create a legacy and do something that has not been done at A&M for almost 100 years.

Anything you structure into the contract another school could do the same on top of giving him a raise and guaranteeing his salary

In 4 years (or less) Jimbo's payout will look like pocket change compared to what some schools will be paying if the current trend in firing coaches continues.

We're between a rock and a hard place here as we're going to be forced to extend Elko and give him a raise before he's really proven anything. The likely outcome here is that we're basically going to give ourselves another huge financial liability if he's not the guy we hope he is long term.

In retrospect we love to say that JFF made Sumlin and that he "won with Sherman's recruits" but we couldn't have known that at the time that Sumlin couldn't build a sustainable winner. Things sure looked good those first couple of years and even into game 1 of year 3 with Kenny Trill.

Similarly we have no idea if Elko can do that and he is mostly coaching Jimbo recruits right now.

But as I'm an eternal optimist and it's not my money on the line... Elko sure looks like the guy right now so let's have one of you TexAgs millionaires step up and write the check to get that man his raise and lock him up here.

Get past the finish line, then it's time to talk. He'll get almost 3 million in bonus's if he wins it all.

I think he probably deserves something close to $10 base but good years need to be incentivized to $15ish and buyout (hopefully not needed anytime ever) capped at 2.5 years or something.

Definitely a lot of recency bias going on here. And you'll probably be crying with the rest of us when he's winning championships elsewhere (see Bear Bryant). Just because we screwed it up once doesn't mean we're going to do it again with another terrible contact structure (not to mention Woodward just got fired for it). Also, consider the fact that we've actually had more like 5.5 seasons to look at him with being DC. I think we can say Elko is believable at this point. I understand if they're negotiating now with plans to announce if they get a Mizzou W, but anything longer is just going to tick him off to where he'll leave.

Increase his base salary by $500k for every regular season win the rest of this season. Keep incentives the same as now.

What if we go 1-2 or 0-3 in the remaining SEC games? My measure of expected success is gaining a playoff bid; short of that, I don't think we need to give Elko any more than he's earning now. He's done a great job so far, but the season's not done.

If we lived in perfect world, sure this might make sense; however, we're now in bizarro world with Freeze now fired. It also doesn't help WHEN YOU'RE THE ONLY PROGRAM that hasn't locked up their coach. Yes, we should be smart in negotiations, but every day we wait the likelihood of us losing him and replacing him with nothing good goes up. Because who is even available at this point to replace him with?
