They see what he's building and are really afraid of us now.
Never heard of or seen this guy before. Don't see it happening, but they're gonna throw this around as a distraction.

I don't see Elko leaving for PSU, but he could.

I imagine his agent will leverage the various openings to get himself a raise by getting Elko a raise.

We have been susceptible to overpaying.

I don't believe it myself, but if you accept the rumor that adidas has a seat at the table for a head coaching decision at Penn state, they would not be happy with poaching from one of their other strong brands

Has adidas committed to us like they have TN and Penn St?

Their runway with other schools is longer, we had signed a 5 yr deal that expires end of the '27 season. I don't know of any reasons yet we would not consider extending the deal, but I'm sure there will be another round of negotiations. In the meantime though they would be betting Elko could have the Aggies In they playoffs at least once or twice between now and the end of '27, and maybe an SEC championship

Elko is an intelligent guy. He's not going to jump on a big contract as soon as its offered. Being patient could land him a bigger contract than what Pedo St MIGHT offer

Their strategy seems to be pick a few programs, funnel athletes there, build the relationships, keep the players in the adidas family. They handed TN Tristan keys this year. They are deeply invested in penn state football success.

We need them to buy invest in us as their TX program long term. We have been very loyal.

His agent is praying the Ags don't repeat the late-season meltdown of last year (after starting 7-1).

I hope that, too (but for different reasons).

Gig 'em.

Elko has everything he needs to win big and sustain it here.
Any other job would be a lateral move.
Period.

Big time!

Just seems to me that the days of grossly overpaying coaches with stupid buyouts should be over now that NIL is in place. Indiana's recent deal to me screams that they are 5 years behind the times. Shouldn't those funds be used now for top flight talent?

he could also retire from coaching and take up piano.

I don't see that either, and its only a little less likely.

Our job is better than PSU
It's equal to Florida
It's below Michigan

I am 100% for a raise, just have a manageable buyout number.

Who are these guys? Just a random low ratings cfb podcast speculating about a situation they have no insight into? No reason to worry about this yet. Let the season playout first.

Elko's contract incentivizes him to be successful with massively increasing payments for championships and playoff appearances. That should be the model for college football going forward.

Hopefully, Elko is an honorable man and honors his contract rather than greenlighting his agent to agitate for more pay by insinuating he'll jump to some other school. A&M has been duped into massive extensions and pay increases after a coach achieves a modicum of success. I say if that starts to happen this time, call the bluff. If he wants to leave fine. I doubt he does. He's building something here and people like that usually want to see it through rather than jump to a higher paycheck. After he actually wins something, then tear up the contract and give him the raise.

Elko certainly looks like he's doing a good job, but every coach we've had since Tom Wilson has had a season where they won at least 9 games. So Elko hasn't done anything that Fran didn't do. Get to the conference championship game or at least the playoffs, and then we'll talk.

I agree with you. Too bad you're not running the AD, though.

He played college ball in the same state. that is about it. Maybe use it to get a raise here.

Elko left Notre Dame to be the DC here. Something tells me region is meaningless.

I don't think so either, but sadly I think we'll end up having to throw an extension at him to make sure.

Pay Elko $12MM/yr for the next 4 years…who gives a ***** Whatever you do, don't give him a ridiculous, ahem, fully guaranteed buyout like Indiana just did.

23 years and

Fran - after his second season

Sumlin - after his first season

Fisher - after three seasons and still paying

You'd think we have learned our lesson by now.

He admits that he was wrong in thinking Elko wouldn't take the A&M job (not that he wouldn't be offered, but that he wouldn't take it).

His whole reasoning is that Elko grew up up there and went to Penn.

Elko wanted the A&M job the second he left to take the Duke job. This dude is just guessing.

Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman actually talked about this in their latest podcast. Andy was in the boat of "if you are winning at A&M, why in the world would you leave?" and Ari flat out said Penn State would be a step down (for what that is worth). This has been echoed by a few other media members. All that to say, I think the casual fan perception and industry perception of the 2 jobs are very different and we dont have much to be worried about.

Elko is on a tear but his team collapsed last year. I'm fine with improving his contract. But I've watched our fans overthink what a contract represents avd look at it as a way to compel performance instead of a means to have a coach and to observe performance especially as fans.

We need to stop trying to control coaches and merely support them.

You do recall there were about a half dozen starters injured down the stretch, right?

I've heard this too and the whole idea is silly.

  • Penn State has already said Adidas had nothing to do with the firing of the coach.
  • From and advertising standpoint, Penn State is going to draw eyes and generally provide a reliable ROI simply because they have a dedicated following.
  • Adidas won't want to involve themselves with choosing who will be a coach. They are a global brand that goes well beyond Penn State and College football. If a terrible hire was made, they would get blamed. And just think if they had a hand in hiring a coach like Sandusky? It's a legal, ethical, and PR minefield that isn't worth the risk.
  • That's just not how sponsorship deals work, it's a business deal and nothing more. This isn't a Big Red Motors situation where the owner operator is personally interested in the success on the field. The exception to that would be Nike and Oregon although that's certainly diminished over time.
I mean if this sort of relationship were true, wouldn't it also mean similar deals were in place with other schools? Especially ones with bigger followings or more expensive deals? I can't see Adidas having a say in us getting rid of Jimbo or hiring Elko.

I don't really care what the excuse is for every fan to be an arm-chair GM or coach. The collapse occurred repeatedly over many coaches with similar explanations. Why was Elko's special? Note I support him finishing the season,..
