I've come to accept that he'll just never have one. Smart kid, but he doesn't have whatever part of the brain allows passers to make the micro adjustments to drop a deep ball into the basket.

He's serviceable in the run game, read option game and the short to medium passing game. We'll need to scheme around this shortcoming, but he isn't' going to magically learn to throw bombs downfield by next week.

Too bad really, b/c we've got at least 2 and maybe 3 receivers that can take the top off of the D, for the first time in recent memory

Ironically, when he came in as the savior against LSU, he hit a deep ball down the middle.

I do remember that. I had a broken watch once.

I've seen him throw deep enough times that now when he does it I don't even hold my breath and hope it'll connect. I know it's 80% going to be an incomplete...10% going to be a pick.

Honestly, the best realistic outcome is we draw a PI flag

He throws a fantastic 30 yd pass on a bullet, but he just
can't master the arc needed for longer balls. it's kind of strange.

Yes. When I was complaining about he long ball in my living room somebody pointed out the ball he threw to KC on the left hash that ended in a TD.

I said the same thing. That was a "medium" distance throw with no arc or leading required. He just rifled it right in there.

He doesn't have the "arc" bomb that some kids just seem to have instinctively

You don't need an awesome deep ball to be one of the top 10 QBs in college football.
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.

This is true. He can win us a lot of games, maybe even get us to the playoff...

But he won't play in the league without one

He can make the throw…. He just needs to run more and let his instincts work for him.

I don't think I want him getting hit. He's what, a buck seventy soaking wet?

This brings up another point...how GOOD are KC and Mario!?

It's night and day difference, and I keep thinking back to the dozens of 4 and 5 star players we brought in at that position that could just never get open to save their lives

Even #2 is a distant third best receiver for us.

Makes me think we should just always buy proven receivers from the portal going forward.

He's got a helluva arm, he just needs to settle down and try some loft on that deep ball. His instinct is to sling it but he just needs to toss it.

I guess I missed the news where the Aggies have an NFL team now?

I kid, I kid.

If you don't give up turnovers, can hit the short passes on a rope, and add some mobility to the QB position, you can in fact have a great career as a backup QB or a journeyman.

Make $1M a year with a long career and few injuries, and can still pick up your grandkids after you retire.

Easy drill. Have him stand several yards behind the goal post depending on how far the throw needs to be. He has to pass it over the crossbar and hit the receiver. You can't throw a flat ball that way.

Y'all tell Klein and Elko and you're welcome.

just stop the throwing the deep ball EVERY single time… our O is golden when we throw 5-20 yard routes… chunk it deep maybe 1-2 times, but not repeatedly like we do… stick with intermediate routes and the O is great

This! Particularly when we're down 3-0 and really need to sustain a drive and put points on the board. We killed some drives last night with ill-timed deep throws.

I think you saw in the second half the first thing he needs to do on deep pass plays. Hit the underneath guys.
Defenses know we have speed to go deep so they have to respect that with corners and safeties. This leaves nickel and lb to cover other wrs, the or rb in lots of space.

Seems like early in games every time we call a deep pass Reed is set on throwing deep. I get it once to keep defense honest...... But it seems like we try it each of the first 3 drives and usually when we have longer distance to get a first down. It puts us away behind almost like a penalty

Hit the underneath stuff earlier in game and spread out the deep shots thru entire game
warrington74

He needs one deep ball in each half. Get lucky for a catch or chalk it up to keeping them honest. Then pass 15 yards and in

Get TE more involved

He does a great job on throwing screens passes and to the flat.

I'm fine with throwing some deep balls that aren't going to be completed.

But not when the check downs for a first down are there.

Question... From someone that's never played the game
On that deep ball how much of the accuracy is the QB putting the ball on a designated spot because that is precisely where that WR is going to be (like leading a bird because the bird doesn't know) and how much is the WR adjusting speed on the run to ensure he is where the ball will be on time?

I realize if you short it and the WR has to pull up it gets more likely to land right in the hands of the safety, if they don't just completely tangle up and hope the PI flag goes your way.

This. If he puts more air under the ball, our receivers will be able to adjust and grab it.

Reed's deep passing is so bad you almost always know it's overthrown almost immediately off his hand.. without even the benefit of seeing the receiver yet on TV. Just obviously too much speed/not enough arc.

Yea he doesn't put enough air under his deep balls that allow the receivers to adjust and make the catch.

The issue in the first half was we kept trying to pop a Deep one to begin our drives. Then it put us behind the sticks and we became predictable for the defense. The one deep ball he actually did throw great resulted in a flag for interference so it couldn't be caught.

I understand stretching the defense even if you don't convert it because it can pay off later, but it just felt like we tried way too hard to make that be the first punch to loosen the D.

That said, we made adjustments to the strategy and then dominated them and looked much better. We've seen previous staffs refuse to deviate.

He's throwing closer to the inside and giving safety a chance

They need more air and outside more

Our former QB from Humble said the deep ball is the easiest ball to throw…

Uncle Rico also says that…

I think Bethel Roman runs crisper routes with worse hands and Bussey is still learning the technique of being a wr but has much better hands. Wish we could meld those 2 into 1

I think he probably is, but it's a worthy question. IMO, Bussey is probably the second best running back, however. I'll continue to contend that Bussey should be the third down back, as he has more contact balance, power, and vision than Owens. I recognize I'm saying this after Owens just had the best game of his career, but last night didn't change my opinion that he plays slow for an apparent fast guy, has well below average vision, and has poor power for a 215lbs back. He's a straight line runner who goes down on first contact far too often.

Won't that be called a safety when he does it in a game???

I'm not sure Bussey has the burst to be a multi carry RB. His speed seems to kick in 3 or 4 steps in and is more linear in nature.
