Wouldn't mind having Sherman back on the staff for either recruit evals or o line.

He's the one coach who left the team better than he got it.

Down to earth? Grounded? I'll show my age...

Emory Bellard.

"Down to earth" and "grounded" even describes his offense.

Mike Sherman is 70 years old and hasn't coached football in seven years, and no real football in 12 years. I would very much mind having somebody who fits that description on our coaching staff. Terrible idea.

His eye for talent cannot be denied. He brought in Johnny when he didn't have many offers and he brought in Mike Evans. Just to name 2. Our oline with him as he was the best we've had in DECADES.

I don't care so much about his age, can he get the job done. I think he'd be excellent at recruit evals.

Sherman.

Great man, great talent evaluator, still wish it had all worked out

I think it was RC or Elko. We'd have been much better off for the past 30 years + had the BMA's listened to RC about falling behind in the facilities race .

Sherman doesn't make the cut just because I don't think he understood how to motivate and manage 17-23 yr olds. He was a good football man and recognized player potential in recruits.

Sherrill doesn't make the cut because he was just kinda quirky especially with the press and probably the bma's to a lesser degree. He knew how to win tho.

Sumlin clearly lost control of the players .

Fran was close to clueless in just about every way. He was lucky to have had Patterson imo. Patterson made him a bunch of money. Was never a good fit here.

Jimbo was complacent . Decent to good coach but way hard headed and didn't know his own limitations and the game passed him by. As I think back… he never really had to build anything that I can think of.

Does this list only go back to the seventies? What about Bryant, Norton, or Bible?

His firing is why Tannehill wants nothing to do with A&M as his alma mater.

Not many Ags still alive that remember much about them.

To be fair, he wanted nothing to do w Johnny and told his assistant that was high on JFF, "you deal with him, but go ahead."

Thats okay. Tanney was a better receiver than QB and a better QB than medical doctor…

Coaches are, in corps terms, in the middle of the chain of command. Players should respect a coaching change but he keeps it to himself so I don't mind the chip on his shoulder.

I didn't know that about Tannehill but I think a lot of Ags weren't all that enthralled with the way Sherm's firing was handled. In hindsight we probably should have given him another yr.

Sherman was done so dirty by our AD. I'm ashamed of how that was handled. He deserved better.

Say what you will, but Tannehill made it to the NFL for some time. It's a blight on how A&M handled that firing. It was ****ty. And maybe we got some karma with Sumlin without JFF/Kingsbury to save him.

I've only met and interacted with two:
Emory Bellard (I was a kid when I met him) the little interaction I had with him he seemed pretty laid back

R.C. Slocum (went to school with one of his sons who was a Senior when I was a Sophomore and he was really laid back and cool to me when he didn't have to be) I ate dinner with him at one of the Coaches Tours. He asked if he could sit with us for dinner and we had a nice conversation. Just general stuff. We had our newborn daughter with us and he asked if he could hold her. Of course we asked if we could take a picture of them. He was just a genuinely nice human being that shared some things in common with us.

Hands down Bellard. I have a good story on him.
Emory Bellard was my BIL's father's roommate in college.
They were very close.
He told me if I ever had the chance to tell him hi.
One night after midnight yell my future wife and I were walking back to my car and we were the only ones walking on this sidewalk when we looked up and coach Bellard was by himself walking towards us.
I stopped and told him about my BIL's dad. He stood and talked with us like he had known us all his life!
Great guy. Very personable and polite.
Will never forget that.

In their prime? I would say Elko. Today? I don't know. I doubt Slocum, Sherril or Sherman can jump that high at their age.

I talked with a very very good former football player that played for Stallings here. NFL guy. 30 + yrs after he had retired from football. He hated Stalling's guts. Said he was the meanest coach he ever played for by a wide margin. Probably at that point in time Stallings method was to replicate the Junction Boys method. He was still a young coach when he was at A & M. I suspect Stallings mellowed over the years.

If somebody told Gene Stallings he would win the next game if he cut the fingers off all the linemen's left hands, he would have done it.

Good story, Gunny.

My story is him and his wife inviting the FTAB seniors to their home one mid-week evening during the season. He jokingly asked me, at 6'3" 230 lbs., why I wasn't on the field during the game and not just halftime. I told him if he had been coach when I started school, I would have.

Kingsbury did nothing to save Sumlin or Johnny Football. Kingsbury owes his entire career to Johnny Football and his ability to make electrifying plays.
