I have seen a bunch of comments and internet experts criticize that call as if it was close. I just went back and watched the replay.

He was past five yards downfield from the line of scrimmage. The ball was snapped right about the 21 and a half yard line and he was closer to the 16 than the 17 when Reed threw the pass. So he was over two yards past where he was allowed to be.

It really wasnt a close call. Im surprised so many people on here are criticizing that. But whatever.


Edit to add. That's a bad title. He was two full yards passed where he was supposed to be.

Yep, at least five yards past the line of scrimmage and just lollygagging around

When the ball was thrown he was not that far off the line. He was legal.

It was the correct call

On the opposite side of the field though I think. No effect on the play

It wasn't close. Go watch it.

Doesn't matter. That has nothing to do with it. The ref has no idea when he throws the flag whether or not that lineman will ultimately make an impact on the play. And it's not a judgment call anyway.

Dumb call but also dumb of ARA to be that close for no reason

Not really a dumb call. Two plus yards past where you are supposed to be is called every time.

Did OP take Auburn +6.5??

Some big money did. Officiating was obviously corrupt.

Whatever game you are watching tonight watch for a lineman being more than five yards, so more than two more yards than allowed, downfield when the ball is thrown and not see a penalty.

I'm going to guess you won't find an example.

Frustrating that he went so far downfield. Frustrating that no deception took place and that it had zero effect on the play. Correct call but nobody would've said anything if it wasn't called.

There was the same (almost exact) call against Georgia in the first half of their game. Pass to the right, left tackle meandering downfield. Flag. Actually, I think the UGa QB threw much quicker than we did, so in my view, there was less of a reason for a flag there.

They're going to nail ineligibles downfield and take a fairly strict view of the rule. I think the interpretation is a bit strict, but by the letter, it is correct. They didn't ask for my opinion on the matter (nor anyone else's on here). Bottom line: get over it.

The 'didn't affect the play' argument makes zero sense. The official has no idea whether or not the actions of the player will affect the play when he throws the flag. It's not a consideration.

Haven't seen a replay but in person it looked like some very late flags being thrown…late enough to see what happened on the play and then dropping laundry. Just saying.

That's what these refs were doing. And the game hit both the under and we failed to cover with 23 total penalties between both teams.

It's obvious what's going on but some people still want to believe refs aren't corrupt.

Number 55 is a Redshirt Senior and OL starter. The game would have been over. The officials would not be given the opportunity to make that. call. This discussion shouldn't be necessary.
