Okie lite made a big mistake in handling his dismissal in this manner.

I think they'll regret it.

He's been there for 21 years and was struggling this season. I really don't think this is shocking.

I mean, hell, a baby born the year he took the coaching position can now legally drink.

Inevitable, just wish he could've beat Tulsa and gone out with some honor, "resigned" at the end of the season and got his statue at Boone Pickens.

I can see Gundy being completely done with big time college coaching, even at 58. He hated NIL and the portal, just like almost every old school coach in any revenue sport.

He's also made around $70M as a head coach and is owed another $15M for his buyout.

He's still fairly young. I hope he decides to spend the rest of his days spending it with his family and having all the fun he wants and enjoying his success.

Let's see!

Okie State, UCLA, VT, Florida...Hmm. Too early to tell about Dabo at Clemson, but he hasn't accepted NIL and portal power yet. He probably safe though

Might be a few others.

Traylor was the first guy I thought of when I heard the news.

Arkansas is gonna bump Petrino back to HC.
Florida will get Kiffin.
Jimbo may end up at VT but that's just a wild ass guess.
No clue about UCLA I think the move to the Big 10 nuked them.

with the amount of money gundy has made he should ride off into the sunset coaching stillwater high or go back home and coach the midwest city bombers.

Refusing to? Or not able to since T Boone died?

OSU has top 3 athletic revenue in their conference. If their Big 12 competition can use NIL, Gundy could have too. He's on record of how much he didn't want to.

According to heartland sports, State ranks ninth (of thirteen) in the Big 12 NIL spending and barely above the top of the spending by the Group of Five Conferences.

SI had them at 6th in the Big 12 last year. They were within 10% of everybody above them but Kansas (assuming they just had a big donation or something because it's way out of line with the prior year of $118 mil)

But let's say they are just top 6. They are still not poor by big 12 standards. they should easily compete in that league with a competent coach.

You are quoting athletic department budgets. That's a different topic. I am comparing NIL spending. They are not the same.

Sorry, my eyes skipped over NIL in your post.

My point was that OSU can compete with their big 12 counterparts in the NIL. The reason they didn't was because of Gundy. He said he thought NIL was going to be regulated and that the "buying" of players wouldn't last. He admitted he was wrong and that this was the first year they attempted to use NIL in the portal. He said all of that this past December.

OSU is a good gig for an up and coming coach. They will never compete for a national title, just like the rest of the big 12. But short of getting an SEC of B1G job, it's in the top tier of good opportunities.

There are some Arkansas boosters trying to work on Lashlee behind the scenes too. Arkansas will likely need a new AD as well so message board rumors are reuniting him with Rick Hart.

I liked Mike Gundy; I hope he enjoys his forced retirement. I'm sorry that he, like many others in sports, didn't retire when he was still liked, revered, and wanted.

The poem below addresses how ephemeral fame is in athletics.

Quote:

To an Athlete Dying Young

By A. E. Housman
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose....
