It worked out for us becuase we won. We burned like 9 sec and only gave up 6 yards more than a kick in the end zone.

I still wonder about that call. If they had caught it in the air ran to the 50 it might have been bad call.

Do like being aggressive on the road when playing a good team.

I agree. I don't like the call

Only if wind is blowing at you or your kicker can't get it out of the end zone

They did have a stud returner if your kick is short

The kick only burned 2 seconds. We kicked with 11 seconds on the clock. The returner took 2 seconds to get out of bounds.

If you know your guy can kick it out of the endzone and force a touchback then kick it deep

If your kicker can't the short kick that does not allow for an organized return is a reasonable choice

Again touchback is preferable not sure how strong Randy's leg is

I didn't like it based on how piss poor our kick coverage had been all night. Otherwise, it is the right call because it forces them to either call a fair catch or burn a few seconds off the clock.

Didn't like the short quick given that they only needed a FG to win and had time left for a play or 2 to get into FG range

You do that because it makes it really hard for them to return it. If you kick it deep they have a chance to run it all the way back unless it's out of the back of the endzone. They aren't taking a touchback otherwise, this is basic football knowledge.

Almost every kickoff went 5 yards deep into the endzone

And that is returnable. We had just returned one for a TD save the flag.

Smart call to mitigate the return and the yardage difference was probably only 4-5 yards.

I like it.
Regardless, they're playing deep for FG range in the ensuing plays. You're forcing them to make a pay on an erratic and wildly moving/tumbling football. If it's a punt that isn't fair caught the receiving term ALWAYS clears out and takes the bounce and whatever field position. Can't do that on a kick off, they HAVE to cover it, it's a live ball. Either way the next okay will be a quick, short clock catch and run for the sideline

With 11 seconds left are you going to have your guy attempt a return and burn the clock or take the ball at the 25 with 11 seconds to go 40 yards?

Don't like at all. Especially with home cooking clock operator can pad a couple seconds

It's 50/50. No need to debate what might have been, just discuss what happened. And it worked out.

If there was 30+ seconds left I'm sure we would have kicked deep assuming they would take the touchback. With them being in total desperation mode they could have returned it with a throwback or reverse, anything is possible.

If we knew we could kick it OUT of the back of the EZ we would have.

I didn't like it the second the kick happened.

We should have kicked it deep and either gotten a touch back or let them run it out which would have burned at least 5 seconds.

The ONLY thing that kills you in that scenario is a TD run and that is unlikely.

That 6 yards we gave them is huge when all they needed was a FG to win. ND's goal should have been 2-3 short out of bounds throws to get into FG range to win. We gave them one of those plays for free by gifting them 6 yards.

I liked the call. Running clock was important. They only needed a field goal. Run clock. Limit plays.

They only had time for two plays following the kick. Perfect setup.

I didn't like the pooch kick in the air. Would have preferred a hard squib kick directed at the same player.

With a touch back they'd still need to go at least 40 yards in <13s. That's realistically enough time for 2 throws and a FG. Cutting it to 11s means meant they had to do what they did: one deep ball, and then a scramble drill. 10 yard passes to the boundary weren't going to help at all.

2-3 short plays and then a FG? In 11 seconds? There was only time for 2 plays.

Honest question - how good was punt coverage? (not talking blocked punt but actual down-field). Missed from Craver's TD in the first to around 14:00 left in 4th.

Because the pooch KO is like a punt coverage versus kicking into the end zone and having a run back is typical KO coverage. I'm thinking it's a question of which was better, because both would have clock running. Maybe the TD return from A&M changed their opinions.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Do like being aggressive on the road when playing a good team.

You do it to eliminate the risk of a big return, and accept they start 10-15 yards further upfield than a touch back.

The call ended up being fine. They had just watched Terry house it on outside. Can't have that or even a big return.

If I understand it correctly, the short kick prioritizes air time rather than distance so the kick team has time to converge on the ball and prevent the returner running it back. It's very much playing it safe, even if it gives the opposing team an extra 10ish yards more than they would get from a normal kickoff.

It did in effect allow them only 2 plays, rather than 3 plays that 13 seconds might've provided since it was 4 seconds left after their 1st play.
