Yes, the 3rd stringers gave up a trash TD in both games, but there is a decent chance that we are seeing the real defense now. Is it great? Probably not, but sample size is too low to say they are a bottom half of the SEC defense. There is enough evidence to suggest that they can be pretty decent.

So what's your point? We have the worst defense in the SEC? Two games into a CFB season doesn't mean much. We are going to find out a lot about this team Saturday. Maybe ND puts 300 yards rushing on us and beats the breaks off us. It's possible, but honestly I don't think it's likely.

Stats are stats. We currently have one of the worst defenses in the SEC. Most other teams played a team with a pulse or also played cupcakes and thus far we are bad in comparison. I swear there is no way most of yall went to A&M.

And absolutely yall are right, we wont know exactly how good or bad we are until every game has been played, but if that's your take why comment? You won't have enough information until Jan to formulate an accurate opinion...

That being said I think/ hope we will end up as a middle of the pack defense. Hopefully im wrong and its great.

I think all we can really determine at this point is that they are not a dominant defense. Too many issues with tackling and allowing explosive plays carrying over from last season. Can they be good enough and make key stops or force key turnovers? That's what I'm hoping for, I believe the offense this season is explosive enough to compete against anyone.

Backups plated the 4th qtr vs UTSA and 1.5 qtrs last week. Starters have looked pretty decent out there other than 2-3 plays.

Ranking 12th or worse in the SEC in 4 major defensive categories is a bad sign because we have played 2 cupcake games, while 12 of the other 15 SEC teams have played one Power 4 opponent. Ole Miss and Kentucky already began SEC play this past Saturday. The road game at Notre Dame this Saturday will be our first real test.

But it happened. And has a pattern of happening going back to last year.

I have a feeling we either dont have a good defense and/or dont have good enough players on D but that said , its way too early to judge based on just two games.

This game imo is probably coming down to 4 players.

Reed: can he shine or at least not make critical errors?

York, Anderson, and Brooks: If these guys cannot step up and make plays ND will get 31 this game and we lose if ND gets 31.

Jeremiyah Love has a chance at a 200 yard game with the terrible run fit and contain discipline by this defense. I can tolerate it when a kid just isn't as good as another kid, but what drove me nuts in the first two games was watching the defensive HC's defense look like they didn't know the fundamentals - and against vastly inferior opponents.

I feel like we typically play up or down to our opponent.

Like Elko's last year here in 2021, we got dog walked by Mississippi State & Arky, but beat Bama & a top 10 Auburn team if I remember correctly.

Only time will tell, I'm hoping it's just our team not "getting hype" for meaningless games, but I'm probably wrong. Even IF that's the case, that issue has to be fixed.

The proponent of failure in those '21 losses was Jimbo/offense. Despite ANY of our defensive shortcomings, it wasn't nearly as terrible as offense. We don't have that issue now.

I'm pumped for Saturday. Last year Weigman threw 2 INTs, couldnt extend plays, WRs couldn't get open, and Jaydon Hill was a starter on defense.

Even with York getting juked out of his shoes in the gap by Price on that TD, this offense we NOW have would have made up for last year's defensive issues against ND.

But I would much rather be in, say Oregon's shoes, with a near top 10 defense and the #3 offense after two games.

That inspires confidence. And it will bear out at the end of the season.

They will be a playoff team. We are questionable.

Fans are drawing conclusions because what they are seeing is all too familiar - a decent offense and a middling defense against inferior competition.

Historically that looks like 8 & 4.

You don't get to cherry pick which stats count. While we were giving up garbage yards and points, our peers were shutting out their cupcakes. It all matters.

Obviously, the real season starts Saturday night. If Elko finishes 8-4 or worse, he's a dead man walking, so this game is huge for the program and the head coach.

Elko is waiting to unleash his real defense against ND. The last two weekends were clearly to mislead everyone. It has really worked!
He's a master of illusion.

It's interesting how a coach today has to get so many new faces to work in a system in this day considering the portal. It seems the more complex an offensive or defensive scheme is works against a team. Even players understanding how your team mates fit into that system has to play a part.

No one knows how good each team really is at this point but if ND stacks the box against the run and has the best corners in the game, they still have to cover Bussey, Reed running, and our tight ends. If Reed has a good game, ND will have its hands full.

Defensively, it is interesting to see that whenever Elko gets after them, they step up big. Makes me wonder if they have been going through the motions on two weaker teams?

I think it will be a fun game to watch and regret not going in person.
