Passing game looks improved, although a couple of those WR screens were almost turned into pick 6s. Not sure if it was the QB or the formation, but they jumped it.

Run game seemed weak. Some of that was that we called a freaking bunch of passes early.

D looked terrible in the first half. Much better after that first play of the 2nd half. Hard to know if that was us playing better or them getting tired.

We avoided disaster, but still look like a 8 win team.

I'm hoping we were letting vets play more tonight and there is some youth that can step in on front 7. If not we are in serious trouble on D. With a solid D there are plenty of weapons on O for the first time that I can remember.

Underwhelming performance at home against an American Conf team.

I saw 2nd half adjustments with DE setting the edges (even 2nd teamers) plus #3 Ratliffe started going downhill to fill gaps on runs.

Marcel's 3rd read to #84 on sideline route for 13+ yard reception was beautiful.

Punter seemed to have a lighter leg than past years.

OL run blocking needs a look BUT Reuben did break a tackle!!!! Leveon will take another game to get 100 confidence back.

Marcel threw 4 TDs. We won.

Onto Week 2.

This team doesn't have the physicality to compete for the top four in the SEC, thus, is not a legit playoff team. That's all that matters.

Our pass D gave up only 121 yards to their starting QB, in an offense that is pretty good passing. And we didn't give up a passing TD until 14 seconds were left in the game, our backups vs their backup QB.

I don't think that's shabby. They were 11th in the nation in pass offense last year and 12th in total offense.

They didn't need to throw - they were gashing us with their running game til mid-3rd quarter when our talent advantage and depth finally wore them down.

That's not 100% true. We gave up a total of 203 yards rushing to them, on 33 attempts.

Take away the one (horrible) play to start the 3rd qtr, and that means it was 128 yards rushing on 32 attempts, for an average of 4.0 yards per carry, for the rest of the game. Ags averaged 4.7 ypc.

If our running game was bad, then theirs wasn't very good either.

Overall C

Defense not good - D

Offense no many sustained drives…no running game - C (WRs are impressive and huge upgrades)

Special teams - A

Didn't look like a team that is tired of being 8-4. We are soft up the middle at all three levels, and we still have an issue containing the edges.

Two newcomers looked like all American WRs against this level of competition.

Main concerns are rushing offense and rushing defense. Everything else looks good enough to compete

The truth is given our teams long history of underachieving and embarrassing losses we may have the best fan base in all of college football.

Offense

Passing much improved
Reed looked better and WR/TE looked significantly better
OL played decent, poor RB hurt some
Owens runs way too timid
1st team ran 55 plays and 34 were passes

Overall a B-

Defense

Run defense was piss poor to start the game but after the 75 yard TD played significantly better
Pass defense did well. McCown had one of his worst games statistically

Overall C-

Special teams

Outstanding PR
Solid KR
White averaged 46 yards with a long of 51

Overall A+

I would give the overall team a C+ we need to do better running the ball and stopping the run. Definitely looked like we came out focusing on the pass on both sides of the ball. If we see the same issues next week I will be concerned.

Really happy with:
- WR talent. Conception and Craver both looked fantastic and I hope Bussey flashes soon. Best WR room we've had (as a collective) in a long, long time.

Okay with:
- Pass defense. Coming in, we expected them to test our pass defense, and until our backups were in, they really couldn't do much here at all.
- TE play. Actually got some solid TE play out of a few different guys. Thor looked nice and I'd like to see Niblack get more reps - he looked like a nice target.

Concerned with:
- QB. Reed missed some throws that he has to make downfield. While I'm glad we finally got some "easy" points, the truth is Reed's status owe a lot to plays by Craver & Conception vs him hitting big plays downfield. I don't think he will lose us any games this year, but I think we will see lots of situations where teams can basically take our 2 big WR out of the short game and Reed is going to struggle to do anything about it. I just feel like he has some really big limitations that allow him to be easily defended by teams with athleticism across their defense.

Terrified about:
- tackling. We still don't do the one thing great/elite teams do every week, which is get the guy to the ground at the point of contact. We still make tackling look incredibly difficult and half the time just bounce off of the guy.
- OL. This should have been a game where we gashed them and ran for 250+ but wondered if it would translate against better teams. Instead, it was a game where a DL that will be in the bottom 3 of our opponents this year kept us in check with basically no real focus.
- RB. When our RBs did get space, they made the least of it they could. Not sure what was going on here.
- Rushing defense. Just terrible. Missed tackles, missed assignments, consistently giving up yards after contact.

The good news: every year teams play games that would be very bad signs if the rest of the season followed suit, and then the rest of the season doesn't follow suit. We've had terrible games before and saw claims of 4-8, 5-7, 6-6 only to show up moving forward and get to....8-4. Point is, while tonight was frustrating, and I'm not calling for a huge turnaround, I'm also not going to forfeit the season or call for a losing season and I suspect we'll show well against ND in a few weeks.

The bad news: The problems we have are not problems I see us fixing quickly and an inability to rush the ball and stop the rush is a really, really bad recipe in the SEC.

I think we actually have enough explosive power outside to stay in some games with explosive plays, but I suspect our inability to control either side of the LOS will lead to us having more games like we've seen the last few years where bad teams hang around and either keep the game closer than they should (MSU last year) or outright win (Auburn last year).

Lot of bleeders on here tonight.

I bet that if the team wins at least nine games this year you won't feel the need to make your post.

But this team will be lucky to win seven so you should copy your post to your clipboard.

A few rhings to keep in mind about our run game.

Moss only ran the ball 3 times.
Reed had the most rushes with 8
Main offense only ran the ball 21 times vs 34 passes

Hopefully tonight was a fluke running the ball because Reed isnt good enough to carry the team with his arm. We will be in great shape if our run game returns to last years level through 8 games.

The defensive front 7, as expected, is not good enough. They got gashed by these scrubs all night.

The pass defense is not fixed.

The offensive line is mediocre in run blocking

Reed is better but still very inaccurate downfield.

At least we have two good receivers for the first time in years.

I'm feeling pretty good about my 7-5 final record prediction after this game.

Reed
+ threw the ball well overall, nice scrambling per usual
- struggled with the deep ball, slow start

WR/TE
- Craver and Concepcion looked amazing. Hopefully they can play at this level in the SEC. I can't believe I'm saying this but Bussy looked slow. We have several solid TE's three guys who can all play.

RB/OL
- disappointing. Should have dominated that patchwork defense.

Defense feels like a continuation of last year. Poor start. Locked in and played better in the second half. Struggled to pressure the QB. Struggled in the first half getting off the field on 3rd down. Struggled stopping the run

Overall not terrible. Hopefully they can improve some things. Thankfully we have some games to get ready for the ND trip.

No way man. We played real competition unlike the sips and swamp kitties. You can't blame our guys for getting pushed around against a powerhouse team

We learned that our defense still gives up huge explosive plays . That is unacceptable imo. Fundamental breakdowns on too many plays . Pass defense was … ok.

Passing game is much improved but the running game was just flat out generally poor. Didn't expect the latter .

What are you talking about!
That new QB looked great
Smith actually had some good plays post glove change.
And the defense played well.

OSU looks good this year.
However wish I could say the same about us

The post game comments by Reed on our run game makes me wonder. He said we couldn't run because they came out in a different defense than we thought they would run. Really? That's all that's need to stop our run game is to give a few different looks that we haven't seen before? That's unbelievable.

Or, we have a group of very negative, weak people who spam this board incessantly. Pretty much the opposite of Aggies.

Yeah. A defense with not a single power 4 player on it, never mind SEC caliber. A defense that doesn't have a single player on it that was even offered by Texas A&M.

If we couldn't run for four quarters because our coaches couldn't figure it out, we've got a really big problem.

But we usually do.

Positives:

-Our staff finally realized the time to get our passing game clicking is now, not when we're down 7 at ND with 1:42 left on the clock. Very embarrassing we're so late to this realization

-Craver, Concepcion, and Boerkircher look pretty good in the passing game

-Reed looks a little more comfortable in the pocket

Negatives:

-Run defense. Don't care that it was Derek Henry's illegitimate son or whatever. Plain unacceptable

-Reed's accuracy beyond 10-15 yards. He just jacks it up there and hopes for a good outcome it seems. How has this not been coached out of him?
4
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You can't coach accuracy.

More specifically, you can't coach touch.

Marcel has zero touch on deep balls. He is what he is and we are going to have to work with it.
Paul Pierce Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think our staff's offensive game plan was to almost completely focus on the passing game. Then, once that got established, get a bit of the run game in there.

But then our abomination of a run defense couldn't get off the field, so UTSA chewed a ton of clock, leaving no time for us to get to the run game.

I bet we can run this season, but can we stop the run? Probably not

7-5 is the best case scenario.

Wouldn't rule out 6-6.

We looked pretty 3rd tier.

- QB Reed was much better than I expected and gave me hope. I can only remember a few bad passes and those were deep balls, which obviously he needs to get right. And protect himself from injury but still dive for 1st downs or TDs if it's 3rd down or later.
- WRs looked really good and TEs looked good.
- OL was decent at pass-protect after the first few bad drives. OL doesn't give that 2020-run-game vibe when we could last run it really well.
- Defense is questionable. Feels like we're still another year away from having the old Elko defenses back; need another recruiting-class inserted still.
- Not sure how York or Anderson graded, but I hope they're not weaknesses vs the good offenses like that long run they gave up for a TD to start the 2nd half tonight.
- I liked that Elko didn't look happy on the sidelines.
- Liked that we focused on getting Reed a ton of pass attempts, as running the ball vs these weaker teams is a waste of time if your QB isn't conditioned to be a great passer by the time you play the SEC+ND teams.
- And lastly, the cringe. Our home game Tv broadcasts are so cringeworthy. Add some freaking female cheerleaders. Instead of constantly showcasing the weirdest-looking & acting 2% of us which routinely negatively-bewilders the audience at home who is deciding if we're cool or not while watching the game.

We'd have to lose to someone pretty crappy to only win 7 games. I concede it's possible we lose to ND, Florida, Lsu, and Sips.
