Riley Leonard was the second leading rusher at ND, with 900 yards last year.
He was the ND offense.

This game seems to be a match up built to validate the Elko and Klein strategy and roster of talent.
If the RB's and O-Line are great and QB-WR are good, this should be a win.

Should be? I dunno about that . Could be… absolutely. To me this game defines what the reasonable expectations should be not just for this season but possibly the whole Elko era. I'm not saying it's a must win but at worst it needs to be super competitive and come down to a late 4th quarter score to decide the outcome. I'm going to be dejected if the Ags get physically manhandled.

He threw for 178 yards a game last season (89th out of 116 QBs) and was 103 out of 116 in yards per catch. It's possible ND could have a QB this season better at throwing the rock than running with it.

Too early to tell.

That would be stupid. We need to practice the plays it will take to win against lesser opponents to see what we need to work on. It's not like we will show ND something they have never seen so let's make sure our best plays work to perfection and see if they can stop it.

statistics do not quantify how good a college QB riley leonard was. but to say we should win on the road against notre dame when we haven't won a true road game in multiple years is ludicrous. i think we have a shot but i wouldn't bet the house.

Our bad QB is also at UH.
So that's a big net positive swing in our favor from last season.

That's all well and good as long as we are handily winning the game.

But if it's a tight game, any coach that does not do anything needed to win that game on that day should be fired.

You don't lose a game or go into the fourth quarter wondering whether you are going to win or not and tell yourself, "whatever happens, we can't show them any more of our playbook because we have to play another team next week".

Leta also mention Weigman absolutely stinking the joint up in that game by every measurable statistic

We literally couldn't have had worse QB play and still had a shot to win in the 4th quarter

Yes their qb this year isn't the runner that Leonard was
However he doesn't need to be
And he's supposedly a much better passer

Let their ol and rb lead the run game and QB focus on passing

Could be lots of trouble

Agreed. Riley was throwing for 150 and rushing for 50 in the ACC when they poached him from Duke, and he delivered a slightly improved version of that for ND.

The Irish needed a game manager who wouldn't turn the ball over, and they got it with an elite fullback type ground game from their QB to boot.

the other kid has been there for 3 years.....yet they didn't like him enough so they brought in Riley Leonard

if they have that dominant of an OL and their RB is already legit they don't need any help on the running front. Teams are going to have to stack to slow down run game which will put more emphasis on being able to throw the ball.

basically the same situation we are in

And yet they have still not named a starter per Pate. It's open at this time and neither have started a game for ND.

So, nothing like what we are in. LOL

The team has been Reeds since last fall. He has started multiple games last season. Leading the team all offseason.

I remember ND having to go to Riley running the ball several times to get first downs as well. He was a strong SOB and ran like a tank. Don't see them doing that again with whoever replaced him.

True. Usually your dual threat QBs are more speed than power. Riley was a very poor man's Tebow (who also rushed for 900+ yards and threw for 2800+ his final season, albeit in 2 less games).
