Youcant,

Fine, if you want to simply hide behind the slippery slope excuse, everyone knows that you can just come up with an example that allows you to show folly with creating a standard that would allow Bloom to play. So why don't you want the NCAA to close the slope up on the baseball players? Explain to me why it is fair for the standard to be set where it is by the NCAA and not allowed to open up more for a another sport? They have done it before, see D. Autrey case in early '90s at Northwestern - paid as an actor.

From what I read, your argument is that if they open it up more, heaven forbid the NCAA would be filled with lawsuits claiming that standard is unfair. Is this close to what you are saying? If it is, kind of seems like you believe the NCAA should not have to answer about the validity of their rules, that they deserve different rules than any other organization in America.

I think the biggest problem that I have in this situation is that whereas one individual can play a professional sport and be paid by the owner of a team, another can play a sport that has no owner to pay for expenses and be required to pay for everything out of his profit or meager winnings. I was a very competitive shooter growing up, and I know exactly what Bloom's situation is. One of really good friends is an alternate for the olympic skeet team, and 95% of his income comes from endorsements. There is no way he could be doing what he does now without endorsements.

So, how much endorsement money do you think Olympians should be allowed to receive? You all would be okay with alumni paying Cat Osterman and all the other 'legit' Olympic hopefuls from tu? How do you define legit? Anyone who is able to make the trials or come close? So, you all think it would have been okay to pay Rod Richardson but not Kevin Murray?

Personally, I think the NCAA made the right decision.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to determine if Bloom were benefitting financially from this? If the endorsements are simply to pay for his trainer, equipment, etc., then make him document his endorsements and expenses. The NCAA reviews the information, and let's him play if it's all legit.

Cases like this and the Williams deal make the NCAA look like a bunch of cold hearted *******s. Yeah, the NCAA can find a rule or technicality to justify their rulings, but they don't seem to even care about the circumstances surrounding it.

The difference between softball, baseball, and track and field and skiing is that with the first you can receive coaching, training, and funding through a university. Skiing is not a NCAA sport and therefor individuals like Jeremy Bloom have to fund themselves in that regard. If skiing was an NCAA sport then that would be different. Cat Ostermann gets coaching from tu. Stacy Sykora (sp?) got coaching at A&M. The same can be said for Archery and other sports. Not for skiing. It is a distinctly different situation for that sport in general.

Josh W,

Skiing is a NCAA sport. It is one of the reasons CU doesn't have a baseball team.

I was wrong in one instance there Quaid. I stand by the rest of my reasoning. Look at the source as well there bud. C, isn't against people like this receiving endorsements. The fact of the matter is I have seen no one prove sufficiently that this would cause any real issue. You can tell if a person has a legitimate claim.

There is a difference between Bloom receiving endorsements to ski while playing NCAA football and Cat Osterman receiving endorsements to play softball while playing NCAA softball.

I think the NCAA could do the right thing and cover their asses if they allowed Olympic Hopefuls, certified by the USOC (or other countries Olympic Committee if a foreigner) to receive endorsement for their Olympic sport as long as it is not the same as their NCAA Sport.
