We play 5 of the top 15 teams, and we have a relatively weak schedule this year. Fun.

#19 might be too high... might be too low.

Who cares... it's all about the $$$ and a week 3 "Top 20 Showdown" of A&M vs. ND will draw more viewers.

How the heck is OU rated at 18?

I have a lot more trouble with KState and Illinois ranking than OU.

#11 ASU, #12 Illinois, #13 USCe

Wonder how long before this group of three falls completely out of the poll.

Go back and compare the preseason polls to the end of season polls for years. The preseason poll really doesn't mean much and is more representative of who was good LAST year.

ASU playoff team with great coach and returning QB. Probably too low.

South Carolina- near playoff team with returning QB. Same as above.

Illinois- They play 2 teams in the top 25 and one of them is Indiana. So same story as last year. Will probably finish with two loses and be a playoff candidate.

Oklahoma is the head scratcher. With their schedule they could be a good team and barely make a bowl.

The last time a preseason #1 won the national title was 2017 (Alabama).

I'm good with this. High enough that winning takes care of ranking, and low enough that the hype should be controllable.

just my two cents but i personally like when we are ranked but not to high. we all know if we are ranked high pre season it will undoubtedly be a disappointing season. but back edge of top 20 allows us to move up a lot quickly if we can win early and at the same time doesn't allow our team to think they are better than they are. after 40 year of watching the ags this is my rankings theory. .

Post Manziel we've finished ranked in the AP Poll only twice, 2018 and 2020. Despite being ranked in the pre season poll nearly every year.

That's okay, their fall will be fun to watch and laugh at.

Baffles me how the defending national champs never get ranked #1 in preseason sometimes. Shows you how useless these rankings are.

But hey let's put a team that lost 16 starters at #1 because they have a kid with a famous last name so he must be the 2nd coming right?

Ohio State had 14 players selected in the NFL draft this year. They are a completely different team this year and it makes sense they would take a step back.

In reality, pre season polls are nonsense in general and just go by perceived talent level. You could put the top 8 in any order and it would still be fine.

Oklahoma is the head scratcher. With their schedule they could be a good team and barely make a bowl.

Counterpoint:

ASU was a "playoff" team last year that was not in the top 12 prior to championship weekend, and is in a conference with a lot of other high-returning-production, low-star-value teams. They finished strong last year mainly by being overlooked, and they will not be overlooked this year.

USCe - They return about 3 absolute stars ... and very little else. They also have the same issue as ASU where they won some games by flying under the radar, and that is probably not as likely this year. The schedule is also harder this year with home and away flopped (which shouldn't matter for rankings, but it does).

Illinois - You might have me here, but they have a four-week stretch of @Indiana, USCw at home, @Purdue, and Ohio State at home, then a bye and at Washington. I'm probably going to be surprised if they are still ranked at the end of that.

Oklahoma makes more sense if people are trying to pick the best team vs. the team with the best record at the end of the year (which is what they are supposed to do). High returning production, a shiny transfer QB, and memories of Lincoln Riley offenses can certainly lead to a top 20 ranking, but the second half of the schedule should have been enough to get all of the you-are-what-your-record-says-you-are types to tank them.

Probably because those national championship teams don't get to play this year.

Could you imagine the NIL it would take to keep a championship team intact (not even counting those without eligibility left)?

2020 was the last year we had the same QB play the whole season
2021 - 2 QB's
2022 - 3 QB's
2023 - 3 QB's
2024 - 2 QB's
