This is sad news and I am glad that the op was a success and he is getting better.

Colorado's Deion Sanders said he battled, beat bladder cancer

Quote:

BOULDER, Colo. -- University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders announced Monday that he underwent surgery to remove his bladder after doctors discovered a tumor there. Sanders said that since the surgery there have been no traces of cancer, and that he will continue to coach this season.

In a packed Touchdown Club at the Dal Ward Athletic Center, Sanders was both serious in tone as well as celebratory and full of humor about what he had been through as he appeared with Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urological oncology at University of Colorado Cancer Center.
Kukreja declared Sanders "cured of cancer,'' adding that she doesn't "use that word lightly.''
"This was not an easy task. ... It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn't a cakewalk. It wasn't easy," said Sanders, who added that he lost about 25 pounds. "That was a fight, but we made it."
Sanders, Kukreja and Colorado team trainer Lauren Askevold spent just over 40 minutes answering questions that have swirled around Sanders in the offseason.
Askevold said the bladder tumor was discovered during one of the regular routine vascular exams Sanders has because of his history of blood clots in his legs.

That surprises me. I haven't looked into it but I vaguely recall my urologist mentioned that there's no such thing as a replacement bladder.

Prayers up for Coach Prime. Big fan of his. Him fighting through this and still coaching certainly dispels some pretty trendy(read: idiotic) narratives that a lot of posters on here subscribe to.

Both he and his sons, as well as Travis Hunter, completely ignored or said "Nah, I can't" to my 13-year-old son when he asked for a picture at the Alamo Bowl lunch this past year. All the BYU players and the head coach were more than happy to take one with him. We have been attending for about 5 years in a row now, and he is the only coach and they are the only players that have blown him off. He has pictures with Bob Stoops, Brent Venables, Mac Brown, Jedd Fisch, Xavier Worthy and Quinn Ewers, and others. Never asks for an autograph, just a pic.

Deion has a long history of saying no to that, almost like a personal policy.

He use to come to Waco for the tapps state championship games and he would tell people no there as well.

Reminds me of when I was a kid & my dad took me to a Rangers game. We had seats right behind left field where Barry Bonds was. Before every inning when the defense was warming up, all of us kids would run to the wall & try to get Barry's attention, some kids wanted autographs, some kids wanted a high five, some just wanted his attention. All 9 innings, Barry never even acknowledged the 10+ kids who were essentially begging for him to just look at us. My dad still HATES Barry Bonds for that to this day. Lol, athletes that act too good to even look at their fans (kids at that) are scumbags to me.

It takes 5 seconds to take a picture with a kid, and half a second to just wave. It's a moment that the kid will remember for the rest of their life.
My username checks out.

We recently lost a valued Ag to bladder cancer. He worked for the FDA and sometimes taught at the Vet School.
Dr. R. Harvey RIP Good man/father/husband. Very smart and honest.

You need a new doctor then because this is not a new procedure Deion had it's been around for many years.

It's easy for us to judge, but we aren't being approached constantly for autographs or pictures. I can imagine that for some people notoriety might get old quickly. Some people have personalities that love the attention, some people hate the attention. Some people are willing to take photos, others would much rather you leave them alone. Just because they dont want to take picture with your kid doesnt make them a bad person. You say it only takes 5 seconds to take a picture, but then it takes 5 seconds for the next person in line, and 5 seconds for the next, etc. I can't hate on someone for not wanting to go down that path. You have to draw the line somewhere. If you draw the after the 5th picture, is it fair for the 6th kid in line to badmouth you?

I was in Chicago recently at a restaurant that Mr. T happened to be at. People were constantly approaching him for conversation and photos while he was in the middle of his dinner. I think he loved the attention and took time away from his meal and friends to talk to the other patrons. I would not have been so willing to entertain strangers while having a meal with friends. I would have been pissed off if I was constantly interrupted while eating. It made me love Mr. T even more, but, if he rejected the other patrons I certainly wouldn't have thought less of him.

Well, it was years ago and I may have mis-understood. Reading the link above, it appears to be true that for the most part, there isn't really a 1-for-1 bladder replacement and things are just fine (back to normal) afterward.

There isn't a "replacement bladder" surgery but they do create and internal bag of sorts that has to be manually emptied.

That said, bladder removal is usually not performed unless the cancer is already pretty advanced, Bladder cancer also has a high rate of recurrence. Prayers for Deion.

That was the case with my dad… had to have his bladder removed. He rolled snake eyes - had both cancer and Alzheimer's. The cancer returned and ended up being what took his life.

This will sound horrible, but it was actually a blessing that the cancer ended up taking him, as the Alzheimer's is what stole his life and the real time we had left with him. I'm sure there are some on here that can relate on a personal level.
