Yeah... but show 2023 vs 2024. There was significant drop off between those two years, and I saw no further development. I don't know if it was Edgerrin Cooper taking all the attention back in 2023, clearing things up for York to just make plays, or if it was Durkin's LB coaching, but he really needs to improve this year.

IMO the single most important metric is team speed. We got beat on the edge last year on both fronts.

I think he gained weight to fast

He gets absolutely torched in pass coverage. Check the USC highlights and you can see him trailing on most of their big plays. I am hopeful that he improves in this area next season.

You can't teach speed. He excelled with a stud DL and playmaker Cooper being the main focus. There is a reason why he wasn't highly recruited, speed and size. Plays hard but this isn't the participation trophy league

In my opinion, Tauren York is a really really good player who had too big of expectations for his sophomore year. He had a fantastic freshman year, especially for a 3 star. People really thought there wasn't going to be a big drop off from Cooper, who was arguably the best Aggie linebacker since Dat Nguyen. Tauren took on more responsibility as a sophomore and it showed the "weaker" parts of his game. Instead of being focused solely on run stuffing like he did his freshman year, he was a do it all quarterback of the defense. Now, the main reason that he was a 3 star was due to the lack of speed and it shows. It puts stress on him in pass coverage. And if you don't have quick safeties behind him, it can be a weak spot in the defense. I trust that Elko recognizes the problem given how much passion he showed after the USC game regarding the pass D.

Tauren is a really good player. Will he ever be the greatest linebacker of all time with 4.4 speed? Probably not. But he doesn't need to be. If he can refine his game even more, I'm looking to see great things from him. Not too shabby from a 3 star linebacker that not many people were talking about. Very similar to Ainias Smith

York is a great player. He lead our team in tackles, had 2.5 sacks and a critical INT in the LSU game. If you want to criticize our defense last year you have to go through a lot of players before you get to York.

I like York and I like Scooby but the issue as it stands is they are essentially the same player: smart, instinctive, run stuffers, but lack speed and cannot play in space. They are both MLBs. When they are both on the field in none running situations we are at a disadvantage. We need more speed on the field at safety to negate this and we need to figure out a way to get these young athletic LBs on the field in passing situations. Supposedly Scooby was blaming with a bum knee all year but the report on him at Florida was he lacked speed. We simply cannot play two slow linebackers in 2025.
