I went back and checked Myles Garrett's combine results and compared them to Shemar Stewart's numbers. Here's the breakdown:
Myles Garrett:
  • Height: 6'4.5"
  • Weight: 272 lbs
  • 40-yard dash: 4.64
  • 10-yard split: 1.63
  • Vertical jump: 41"
  • Broad jump: 10'8"
  • NFL.com athleticism score: 91 (ranked 1st for DE/Edge that year)
  • Garrett didn't participate in the 3-cone drill or shuttle but did 33 reps on the bench press.
Shemar Stewart:
  • Height: 6'5"
  • Weight: 267 lbs
  • 40-yard dash: 4.59
  • 10-yard split: 1.58
  • Vertical jump: 40"
  • Broad jump: 10'11"
  • NFL.com athleticism score: 84 (ranked 4th for DE/Edge this year)
  • Stewart didn't participate in the 3-cone drill, shuttle, or bench press.
It seemed odd that Shemar Stewart ranked 4th despite having better results than Garrett in most events, so I decided to check out some of the other highly rated DE prospects.
Landon Jackson:
  • Height: 6'6"
  • Weight: 264 lbs
  • 40-yard dash: 4.68
  • 10-yard split: 1.65
  • Vertical jump: 40.5"
  • Broad jump: 10'9"
  • NFL.com athleticism score: 86 (ranked 2nd for DE/Edge)
J.T. Tuimoloau:
  • Didn't participate in any events at the combine but was given an athleticism score of 86 (ranked 3rd for DE/Edge).
Jared Ivey:
  • Another non-participant with an athleticism score of 86 (ranked 1st for DE/Edge).
It's strange that Shemar Stewart, with better scores than most of these guys, is ranked 4th. Why is there such a discrepancy in the rankings? He clearly seems to deserve a higher placement.

it is crazy the dichotomy that is shemar stewart

verified athletic testing on par with myles garrett need i say more?

production similar to a 7 th rd draft pick. that is not to say shemar doesn't play hard and do a nic job some of the time on run defense but man his talent reeks of legendary status and the production just wasn't there.

maybe sec refs are that bad and he was being held every play and he goes off in the nfl.

Myles Garrett was held on every play and still got 32.5 sacs

You went back and did it? When the entire internet had already done it and NFL Network spent a week talking about it? Why didn't you just take their info instead of doing all that leg work?

Doesn't 32.5 sacks to 4.5 clearly explain the discrepancy in rankings? I hope Shemar dominates in the NFL. But he wasn't the play here that Garrett was. Not many have been.

The difference the strength of Garrett. You notice Stewart didn't do the bench. That means he can only do 10 or 15 at 225. Garrett did 33

Rumor was it that Stewart didn't work hard. Bench press is something you can improve by working at it.

Not to derail too much… lol but IMO our uniforms now are so much cleaner than the ones we had when Garrett was here.

Stewart also never showed the consistent explosiveness that Garrett did even as a pure speed rusher. You can go watch a Myles Garret highlight reel and he got sacks, hit the quarterback, forced fumbles, blocked kicks, many times before an offensive lineman could get out of his stance and realize that they better grab him.

Stewart did open my eyes watching him at A&M. In fact he was a huge part of me being extremely high on how good we would be on defense last season, because you can see Myles Garrett in him, but flashing that on one or two plays in a game never became more than that. As mentioned above, Garrett also was extremely strong, and also still played extremely smart as well, always seemed to be where he was supposed to be.

Just love seeing our talent excel at the combine and NFL levels...when they didn't help here except w a double team or ref no calls.

Gotta love the SEC!

Strength, explosiveness, and drive. All the difference in the world.

No, it's that we couldn't take advantage of his abilities

Myles had more motor than Shamar showed here at least…

Or it means he doesn't want to risk injury. People have been injured bench pressing at the combine and become out for the year with torn pecs and such. Him pulling a hammy in the 40 wouldn't be as big of an issue moving forward.

One X factor is the decision making process. Myles figured out how to get at the QB more effectively. Shemar ought to study his film, identify what Myles was doing different, and do that himself.

Maybe Myles had a few other things going for him though like other teammates or game situations which gave him an advantage. I dunno.

Imo that's what great athletes do during down time. Study.

I don't know anything about Shemar's intelligence, but that was always what made Myles different. Smart people see things others don't and learn quickly, all of which leads to better performance. It's about more than physical gifts.

I wish Stewart the best and hope he does well. However, I'd be nervous using a top 10 pick on someone who didn't have college production.

I hadn't seen this stat for him touted before, but it could reassure teams about the lack of on the field production.

Quote:

. . . No. 18 Shemar Stewart . . . Stewart only had 4.5 sacks in three seasons, but his time to first pressure this past season (2.43 seconds) was No. 1 in FBS. . . . He'll need to go to a patient team that can develop his finishing production . . .

QB pressures are valued and counted against the OL who concede them. Quickest to the QB is a good starting point to work with.
