were coached by our coaches last year?

Reynold at Duke by Elko and Howard at KSU by Klein?

Interesting.

And they both went to teams that had a ton of talent which covered up any short falls they may have had. Especially Leonard.

Look at their completion pct improvements. Good teams will help, but the path to the national championship typically runs through a very good QB.

Will Howard's big jump in production after leaving Klein is concerning.

& they both had olines this year capable of blocking that allowed for a gain of an inch

Amazing what playing with three 5 star receivers, a 4 star tight end, four 4-5 star linemen, a 5 star running back and a 4 star running back can do for a QB.

Plus another year older with more experience and maturity. Development and development time matter.

We averaged 4.5 stars on our D line in our 2 deep…

How does that help our QB?

It definitely helped York.

Eso si made my point for me. When you have highly talented help around you, you do better.

Quite amazing what giving a QB time to develop, surrounding them with high level teammates along with decent protection (OL) can accomplish. If Klein and Elko were as bad as many on here want us to believe then neither of those QBs would've sniffed the field.

the exact opposite logic would make more sense. Lol

it's play/route design. If you watch the game, it's the schemes and route-designs for the WRs by their offensive coordinator gets them open. And the QB did great passing too.

Having WR's who can make catches when their fingernails are scraping the grass helps. I'm not sure how many of those were brilliant design.

That first TD pass to Smith had him schemed all alone. I think I could have completed that pass

Those are my thoughts. Was it a mediocre KSU team or Klein holding him back?

Probably a bit of both.

And Howard was a backup mostly, wasn't he? Was he just not good or did they fail to properly evaluate talent and intangibles?

Who is Reynold? You can't be a complainer, if you don't know who you're complaining about.

Pretty sure "Reynold" did not ever play for Elko- or even for ND.

He started 12 games last year and 7 the year before missing some with injury. Had 111 total touchdowns in college. Played in at least 6 games in all 5 years in college. No he's not been primarily a backup.

No it's not. If it was, Chip Kelly would still be in the NFL or would have won more games at UCLA.

When Ohio State's wide receivers found out that some quarterback from Kansas State named Will Howard would be the guy throwing them passes in 2024, they weren't sure what to think.

"I didn't know much," wideout Brandon Innis said. "I didn't watch a lot of K-State games."

Innis wasn't alone. Until this season, not many other people knew much about Howard either. He was a middling prospect ranked 882nd in his class who had spent four years toiling away in Manhattan, Kan., at a program with an all-time losing record. This wasn't exactly the profile of a player who was expected to take the wheel for one of the most talented offenses in the country.

Back when he was being recruited, the kid from the Philadelphia suburbs dreamed of starring for Penn State. His only offers, however, came from the likes of Bowling Green, Rutgers and Temple. He ended up at Kansas State, where his freshman year coincided with the pandemic and he was pressed into a starting role during another losing season.

The next four years brought little to write home about. Though Kansas State won a Big 12 Conference title in 2022, Howard was benched midseason in each of his last two years.

elite talent can create separation simply by being an elite talent.
unless they're being covered by a similar elite talents, of which it typically goes 50/50 on who wins that play.

that said, scheme matters.
but elite talent with most any decent scheme is gonna make said scheme look wayyyyyy better.

now in contrast, take a great scheme with average, to below average talent.
(whether you like it or not, that's us right now)
there's gonna be times where it'll look brilliant, and there's gonna be times where it'll look WTF.
especially if the opposing defense is pretty good, and/or has some elite talents themselves.
