Thier commissioner is in talks with the AD's and head coaches to potentially alter the ACC Championship game. They are considering giving the regular season champion a "bye" and then playing the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the ACC championship game, thus protecting their best team and then getting another team in via the auto bid process (assuming the champion would be one of the five highest ranked conference champions). Another option they are looking at is to give the regular season champion - or champions if there is a tie - a choice to play in the championship game or not pending what's best for their program.

Either way it rewards the regular season champion (or gives them a choice) but they wouldn't be eligible for the first-round bye assuming they were to win the championship game.

I bet we see more of this going forward.

So, the the best team in the conference doesn't get a chance to be the conference champion? Or they're the conference champion, and the second and third best tabs get to complete for champion runner up?

The fact that D1 college football is constantly doing mental gymnastics to figure out how to properly put on a postseason, when every single other sport at every level down to middle school has had it figured out for decades is ridiculous. And why? So we can salvage the sanctity of the bowl system? Who gives a crap? No one, players included, cares about the bowl system as it was previously known.

They would have a regular season champion and then a conference champion via the ACC Championship game (sort of like basketball). At least that's what the article stated.

He said another possibility is having the top 4 teams play on the final weekend of the regular season: first place versus fourth place, and second place vs. third place, with the winners playing the following weekend in the ACC championship game. This seems like a logistical nightmare.

The fans, players, and coaches all deserve this. It's much better than having some computer system punch in two teams ranked 1 and 2

So you are saying the ACC will openly game the system to get a team in on the illegitimate premise of the being the conference champion because they won a game called the conference championship game.

Ain't going to happen.

I'm not saying it. Their conference commissioner is saying it.

I think one problem is the number of eligible teams and the nature of the sport.

For college basketball, you have 130+ teams eligible for a championship, and can put on a 64 team playoff/tournament. The same goes for baseball. College football, however, is an entirely different animal. You can't have 64 teams playing in a playoff or the season would never end. It also happens the be the most popular and generates by far the most money. So you have the same number of teams fighting for what is perceived as a smaller pie (playoff spots being the pieces of the pie, not money).

Ultimately we may be heading toward a reclassification and divisions like you see at the high school level.

To the point about the bowl system... they must make money or they would likely be done away with. That's the driver behind it all. That's why this is even a subject. Mental gymnastics to gain the conference more money by earning more playoff spots.

I was assured by someone on Texags with a very reliable source that FSU would be in the B10 by now so this whole thing is confusing.

Well, ESPN feels like they get to decide based on ratings. Funny the leading sports network has been actively manipulating/interfering with the spirit of sportsmanship for decades.

Now the ACC wants to add their two cents.

So they are devaluing the conference championship game…

Seems to be.

Say Clemson is 10-2 next year. They play a 9-3 Miami for the conference championship. Why would Clemson want to risk it? Another game to lose. Another game for potential injury. All you're "maybe" giving up is the bye and that's an unknown. The ACC is saying, assumption on teams, hey we'll put Miami 9-3 against our third best team, SMU who is also 9-3, and the winner may get in with an auto bid pending the Big 12. If not, you've at least preserved your guaranteed "at large" Clemson lock. If Clemson were to play Miami in the ACC Championship and lose, they are likely left out, along with Miami if they aren't ranked high enough.

I think its genius. Make the ACC extra game a chance to get two teams in the playoff every year, maybe even three. Give your best team some rest and protection.

Conference championship games make a lot of money for the conference, but they are an outdated game for the new system.

when its a 2 v 3 game, it loses its appeal and no longer makes lots of money for the conference

the ACC won't end up doing this silly proposal

Get rid of the conference championship games and add another round to the playoffs. That would be more money for everyone

Different topic, but I'd like to see the #1 and #2 seeds in the CFB get to choose their opponent from the remaining teams after the first round. It would be more fair and add another storyline.

Close to the right solution

the answer is get rid of CCG

Go to 16 no byes play the first round on CCG weekend

Make ND join the ACC or BDF

Everybody plays 9 conference games and no FCS teams

last year 7/8 of the CCG participants ended up In the playoff anyway

I like the idea, but it would be tough, or at least it would kill the rivalry games for Clemson, FSU, and any other last game rivalries.

Still, all the conferences need to consider a better way to determine the top 2 teams. The ACC is a 17-team conference that plays 8 games. The conferences need to play more conference games.

well just make your last place finisher the Champion and macimize the chance you get 4 teams in.
