It appears we are in the addition of "projects" (UH WR) and "bodies" (tu TE) stage in the portal process.
We're just in the stage of "improve the roster", period….whether it be the starters or the quality depth.
The fact we're picking these kinds of guys up should tell you a lot about how much "improving" our roster really needs.
The reason why we're Texas 8&4 is because that's right about the caliber of our roster.
The true contenders put in 10-ish draft picks into the NFL pretty much every year, with consistency.
Meanwhile we put in about 3-ish consistently.
I disagree with you. Our talent level has been better than 8-4. We just can't seem to get a full coaching staff that develops that talent and gets them to play consistently at a high level. We have more talent than USCe, Auburn (for now), and Missouri (beat them but they are ranked in the 25).
I'm not saying we should be undefeated every year, but a 10-win season should be in the cards every once in a while. We aren't less talented than Ole Miss.
We hardly had the talent to make it to 8&4. Did you see our WR room? Or our RB room to finish the season? Or our secondary? The list goes on. And let's not forget the amount of transferred we had to bring in just to be competitive, and from G5 schools..
All correct.
Recruiting and "star count" only goes so far.
About all it tells you is that you've got some players with potential, but they may not be good fits, may not have that inner drive, may not adapt to elevated competition level (big fish, small pond syndrome), and may just have too much off-field drama.
But the one stat that's definitive, relative to roster talent, is the NFL Draft.
Only downside is it happens AFTER the season is over.
We've been mostly hovering in that 3-ish range for quite a while.
The teams we wanna run with are in the 10-ish range.
That's a huge difference, and absolutely plays a big factor.
Jury's still out on whether Elko is gonna improve on that. Plus it's not an overnight flip of a switch either.
Should we get to that same point, putting in 10-ish draft picks consistently for several years, THEN we'll know we've got legitimately talented rosters.
That's also when we'll match up against a team like UGA or OhSt, and Vegas oddsmakers will have it as a pick'em game.
Until then, we'll be the underdogs in those matchups, hoping to pull the upset against every one of them.
That's not championship caliber team though.
That's just every Cinderella story's pipe dream.
