I see posts using these initals in reference to South Carolina; I have never been able to figure out what the "w" means.

You sure you don't mean USCe for South Carolina.

USCw= University of Southern California
USCe=University of South Carolina

Southern California is to the west of South Carolina. That's why some place the "w" after "USC"

I just assumed it stood for West and East.

Clarification:

USC (no one uses 'USCw' in 49 states) = School that's won any number of national titles. A true blue blood, in baseball too.

USCe = The also ran school in South Carolina. They have a long-term record of futility that would have killed most of you BAS types many years ago.

I think that the alumni refer to it as SC. Which could cause even more confusion. SC= Southern California.
