Sad news: former Colorado coach Bill McCartney passed away after a long illness Friday. He was 84. McCartney coached the Buffs to the 1990 national title & 3 Big Eight titles

Was a great coach-his players absolutely LOVED him-and he was a better man. Had the privilege to attend his Church. We lost a great one today. RIP Coach Mac

He coached one of the exceptions to a title, along with Lavell Edwards at BYU. They're the only two coaches in the last 60 years to win a title at a place that never had won one before or would win multiple titles during that 6 decades…

McCartney has a complicated legacy

because the stuff that went on at Colorado during his tenure...was really bad

rivaled and at times surpassed OU off-the-field in the late 80's / early 90's

He recruited a lot of ink out of Southern Californi. Some pretty low character players. His first QB, Sal Aunese, got his daughter pregnant and later died of stomach cancer. Eric Bienemy took his place.

Lot of drama on that team including the 5 down win when they won the natty.

Bienemy was a running back.

Darian Hagan was the QB that replaced Aunese

McCartney's grandson, Aunese's son, is now the patriots QB coach
