Trying to understand the mindset of Sark, was this greedy, and why is nobody asking about this...Ball at the 1, lose yards, worst case scenario happens. If you go for 3, there's still 2 timeouts left and the 2 minute timeout. Give the D a chance to hold them to 3 and you get the ball back with time. SVP is saying do or die situation but there were options. Worst case scenario happens and game is lost, but not going for 3 and turning it over didn't give a chance at all. Am I wrong?

8 yards to tie the game, you go for it every single time. 3pts does nothing for you right there. So yes, you're wrong.

Worked for us in November.

Even with the FG, they'd still need a TD. There was just under 3 minutes left and t.u. had only 2 TOs left. You have to assume they don't get the onside, so OhSU gets the ball around the t.u. 50 at best. They face, again, at best a third and 10 from there and don't get it. They punt with 2 minutes on the clock after the warning and t.u. has to drive the field needing a TD that they didn't get the previous drive, even with two 1st and goals.

You can argue the play calls inside the 10, but as said, the FG doesn't do you any good, really. Had they had another minute or so, maybe you kick but not in that situation.

You went 7 yards backwards the play before. You can keep it a 1 score game with them scoring a field goal and a pretty stout defense and have essentially 3 timeouts left. Why not take the points and extend the game? The worst possible scenario happened for tu. If they would have not had the scoop and score happen they would have at least had a chance.

If you kick a FG, you might not get the ball back. Even with a 4th and 8, Texas probably have better odds to score a TD than stopping OSU on defense.

At the time it's 21-14, a field goal gets you to 21-17 with 2 TO and a two minute time out, plenty of time to give them time on defense to give up only 3 and make it a 7 point game, then adjust and call time outs to make some calls to get Mr. $1M to make a throw or two to get you back to the red zone and it's a game again.

I don't know. Between the refs and OSU's stupidity, there should've been ample opportunity to get the ball back. The scoop and score was really the game ender because I imagine the reason Sark went for it was because he figured if they failed, they would have OSU pinned deep so that a stop would get them the ball back in decent field position anyway.

Agreed, but as much as I hate to say it, tu has had a pretty stout D. Let your guys play and hold them to 3 with some time left and see what happens. The night before anQB threw a pick with 30 seconds left. You never know what could happen. Sark did what Elko did and chose pride over sense. Sometimes you get beat and sometimes you get out coached. It sucks being on the losing side but I've become accustomed to it.

8 yards

With the season on the line, how do you risk not getting the ball back by taking the three?

8 yards

TLDR because a FG isn't worth the trade in field position.

Think of it as total yards. Score a TD and then maybe need a field goal to win or tie, and you need 45(ish) yards on your next drive. Kick a field goal and still need to get a TD no matter what and you're looking at 75+ yards assuming you can hold osu to a field goal and get a kickoff or you get a stop and they make a decent punt. 30 yards with maybe a minute or less to get into the end zone is pretty big.

On top of that. If you don't make it, osu is back deeper than if you kick a FG and then do a kickoff. They have to go farther to score and put the game further out of each, and if you can get a stop you have potentially even better field position to get the TD you still need.

8 yard line, used to be the 1. Now 4th and goal...down 7, 2 timeouts left and the 2 minute time out. Do you want Elko to go for it or take 3, cut it to 21-17, give the D a chance to at least hold them to 3 with 45 seconds left and no timeouts by the time you get the ball back? To play for a chance in the national championship. I get go big or go home, but you already lost 7 yards when you were at the 1. What did everyone say when we stacked the line and didn't make it against tu? Why is it different now?

I said going for it was the correct call against tu and it's still the correct call here.

You HAVE to get 7, so every play is a play for 7. You settle for 3 and it's gotten you nothing. Even if your defense gets you the ball back, you are now that much farther from the end zone and still in need of 7 points. Yes, can now win with 7, but you WILL lose if you don't get it.

Best case scenario going for the TD is you make it, stay alive and have a potential for a walk off FG if you get a stop. Worst case except a defensive TD is your opponent is backed up near their own end zone and you need a stop and TD with potential for good field position.

Best case scenario going for 3 is that you still need to drive for 7 and get bad to decent field position. Worst case is you don't get the ball back and lose because the other team just rubs the clock out with first downs.

There is really no upside to the FG because the best case scenario going for 3 is pretty much the worst case scenario going for 7.

Sips needed a TD either way. So kicking a FG would be completely tarded.

Sark went for it bc he assumed if the play failed they he would at least get the magical flag again for PI. It's their formula.

The only bad thing about going for it and not kicking a FG is what happened on the play. Otherwise you have them pinned at their endzone and you hope to force a 3 and out punt and try again. A FG does nothing. The strip sack - 6 was delish though.
