Another example of a coach not needing several years to find success. Especially in the age of the portal and NIL, with A&M's resources playoffs should be a minimum expectation/requirement by year 3, or time to move on.

You aren't part of the immense resources you and others regularly mention? Spending OPM…other people's money…

it's good to play a regular season schedule in which Army is your only opponent ranked at the end of the year

Yes

He's a great coach

Too bad our experienced QB was a head case or we might have derailed it in the first weekend. It is what it is.

He's Asian. They are super achievers.

It takes most coaches at least three years to win a national title: Lou Holtz, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, etc. Took Bob Stoops two years at OU, which was a miracle. Took Mack Brown eight years and that with a multi-generational talent at QB. Heck, Jimbo finished ranked #4 in his third year at A&M. Sark is in year four - may win one this year. Took Harbaugh seven or so years at Michigan. Day is in at least year five.

Please name the other coaches that made it to the national championship game in their 3rd year. I bet that list is short.

3rd year overall? stoops comes to mind: year 2. larry coker year 1. kelly year 2, (jimbo just misses at 4)
its a short list.

if you expand to third year at a school, you get urban, saban, miles, carroll, tressel, ogeron (3rd full year)

I wouldn't worry about this.

We aren't close, and if the billion dollar '22 class and billion dollar NC head coach can't do it…it's not gonna happen. Just accept this and you will be free.

Third year and losing to NIU with all that talent! Just unacceptable!

And all of these schools were loaded with real talent already.

Freeman took over a team that averaged 11 wins the previous 5 years before his arrival. He averaged 9.5 in his first 2 years, then jumped up to elite status in year 3.

Elko took over a program that averaged 7.4 wins the previous 5 years (and 6 the previous 2). He won 8.

Not even close to sold on Elko, and I really like Freeman and actually wanted to hire the guy if possible last year. There are tons of questions moving forward that need to be answered regarding Elko and his staff / program. But some of you amaze me.

Is the argument here the issue is talent or development of said talent? Because we have out recruited ND for the past several years. Obviously, development of the talent is not proving so great.

Recruiting "star" counts have some value, but it's limited.
Just because you stacked up a high star count doesn't mean you recruited what you needed, or got good kids, or got good fits.

But yeah, we've been severely lacking in development too.

Either evaluations, attrition/retention, or development. Not to mention roster management, such as the majority of our 5 stars and national top 100 guys are on the same position such as DL. Probably a little of all of the above.

ND is 9th in team talent. We are 10th. On paper, it should be close. But one had 3 years to get there, the other was very dependent on Fisher's evaluations and development.

So with a different staff, it's a moot point in year one. You have to give a staff more than one year to see if their evaluations, retention, development, and roster management is better. Impossible to say after one year.

Let's also say DB in addition to DL can be highly questioned and a big part of our inflated recruiting rankings. Fisher loaded up on DBs and DL, and both were disappointing this year.

In the last few classes, we have recruited the following high 4 star and/or 5 star DBs: National top 150 guys:

Denver Harris
Smoke Bouie
Marquis Groves Killebrew
Jacoby Matthews
Bryce Anderson
Dalton Brooks
Jayvon Thomas
Bravion Rogers

Other 4 stars include Deuce Harmon, Jardin Gilbert, Dreydon Norwood, Bobby Taylor, Jared Kerr, and Myles Davis and Jordan Pride (granted the last two were true fish)

That's 14 4 star or better DBs over the last 4 classes, and I'd say maybe one was living up to that ranking (true sophomore Dalton Brooks, and even he had his share of struggles too). Most aren't here.

Yet Elko gets here and immediately starts a transfer from San Diego State and Kansas State, and down the stretch, a guy from UAB was one of our top 2 DBs on the field against USC, a guy from Central Florida that was our 3rd safety, and Hill from Florida who was not good there, either. Ricks and Hill were the only transfer DB that came from a big program in Bama / Florida, and Ricks is the youngest guy in the room that needed another year in the weight room.

All it took was having a defense and not playing anyone with a passing-offense.

True, now compare that with all of the coaches who never won a championship of any kind, what does that number look like- hundreds, a thousand? Here are exceptions/anomalies to every rule or circumstance.
