And nothing.

So is that it? Are we just saddled with Bateman again next year? Or is something brewing that I just don't know about?

He is in all likely hood staying for a few reasons:

  • He's on a two-year contract, so if he truly is a bust he will be gone at the end of next season at the latest.
  • Firing a coach, especially a coordinator after a single season is admitting that you made a mistake and brings into question your organizations decision-making ability.
  • Firing Bateman after a single season could come off as Elko using him as a scapegoat, and other coaches could be reluctant to work for him in the future.

It'd be a bad look to fire him now. If Elko thinks things are really bad then he can take over defensive play calling and let Bateman ride out his contract to avoid the bad publicity associated with firing him after one season.

They better hire a sh*tload of analysts, starting with Klein getting offensive-analysts who can drastically help him in the passing game. The fact he presumably didn't make the needed passing-analyst hires last offseason is bad enough. Klein has zero pedigree in passing the football as a player or coaching under others. And then there's Bateman, who surely Elko is on top of given defense is his specialty.

That's the problem….we admit we had issues and to avoid looking bad right now we doing nothing. We would rather look like we know what we're doing, rather than admit we don't. When it's obvious we don't know what we're doing because we haven't won anything since 98. Seems like the same song and dance. Meanwhile a program we aspire to be had a better season and still fired their defensive coordinator.

Bama head coach has offensive background.

Elko is in charge of the defense.

Big difference right there.

Kind of like Sark is in charge of the offense.

I would suspect that the only real change to the staff will be the level of intensity and Elko's involvement. I just don't know what you gain from firing coordinators after year one unless they have done something illegal or unethical. And there are no ethics in college football right now.

You will not looks at top tier replacement candidates if they know they are potentially year to year contracts.

Ethics, malfeasance or misconduct aside....we are stuck with Jay for at least 1 more year.

As much as I want Bateman fired, this is correct.

The optics would not look good and any self-respecting DC would not want to join a program knowing that he could have the rug pulled after a single season.

Elko has a whole off-season to whip Bateman into shape and have him run his defense instead of the bs we saw. Plus he can reassign his duties etc without creating a big scene and utilize his other talents such as recruiting, if he has any.

2024 should have been the year with the schedule and talent on the team. Moss going down combined with Jimbo being tossed and the 2022 class disintegration kept us from competing in the end. 2025 will be a recovery year after the DL losses. Hopefully Marcel improves and we compete in 2026. Bateman should be fired, but I just don't think it's going to happen until 2025 is done.

I think the timing of letting a coach or two go may still be in play.
Classes start 1/13. May be a factor with the incoming fish enrolled.

The talent on the team? We had to go with QB2 bc QB1 fell apart. The WR room was just a step above terrible. The OL was a year removed from being the worst of all time. The RB room started the season depleted. The LB room leaves a lot to be desired. The secondary, well you see where this is going.

Elko had to bring in what was it 26 transfers, and still couldn't fill all the holes. At least not with SEC caliber talent.

As much as we should've gone 10-3, we really almost overachieved all things considered. It's just too bad we couldn't take advantage of the opportunities we set ourselves up for.

He'll take away play calling duties from him, keep him as a position coach, and have him serve more as a Co-DC with Elko running the show on that side of the ball. Pretty sure that is what he meant when he said he'd be more involved moving forward.

This.

Some college football fans seem to think that the only two options for their program are to fire a coach or keep things going exactly as they are. But anyone who has managed anyone knows there are all different kinds of things you can do. Exert more oversight on their decisionmaking. Reassign duties. Get them coaching or mentorship. Push them to change how they approach their job. Etc. And you don't have to humiliate your coordinator by broadcasting all the corrective action you're taking. In fact, there's no reason to. The only thing it would do for Elko is make some angry people on the internet slightly less angry in January.

If the team is improved in the fall, that anger in January won't matter. If the team is worse or the same, then those people will be just as mad whether you told them in January what changes you were making or not. So whether we like it or not, we're just going to have to hope that Elko is doing the things necessary to be successful.

Way overthinking. If someone is clearly not the right fit you don't wait because "it'll be a bad look".

Well, if you're happy with an all-time win percentage of .609 and ranked 25th behind teams like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Mount Union, Wittenberg, West Virginia, Washington, and North Dakota State we've been pretty good.

au contraire. I'm not expecting you to go looking through my posting history but if anything I've probably been waaay lighter/easier on this program than most of y'all. But the sh** show we saw those last 6 games…….that was inexcusable. There were hints of it way before the season ending thud, but we were able to overcome against lower level competition so it got glossed over somewhat. Once we hit the meat of the schedule (such as it was……honestly a pretty light schedule) we got exposed. Embarrassingly. I'm willing to overlook a bad game. Maybe two. When it becomes a weeks long trend, hell yeah I'm gonna pull the fire alarm on it. That was AWFUL.
I hope y'all are right and Elko will be pulling more of the defensive strings behind the scenes next year. Be real, he was the best DC we had here since RC. He didn't just forget everything overnight. Just put too much trust in his buddy and it backfired on him big time
