Watching live I sure thought the block that sprung Bolden was illegal (blindside block). What do you guys think? IMO, nothing like the obvious targeting no call but I thought this could easily be called if it was anyone but Texas.

For the record, I don't really have a big issue with this no call. But I do think if A&M did this it would probably get called back.

It's definitely a block that could have been called, but it occurs in the middle of the jam and it's unlikely that any referee had a clear view. It's similar to the "holding could be called on every play" where it wasn't severe enough, it wasn't out in the open view of a ref, and it may not of had a complete impact on the outcome of the play.

Makes sense. Watching live I thought there would be a flag. But it happens so fast in a group that I can kind of understand this one.

I knew you would show up. Anyone that defends the no targeting call like you did. I knew you wouldn't like this post.

Sorry to hurt your feelings.

I mean you said you were working on a conspiracy book. I give you more material and you tell me to move on.

It probably was a blindside block. The reason it wasn't called probably had a lot to do with the officials' mechanics. During a punt play, the 3 deep officials generally line up in a straight line fairly deep. Ignoring potential fouls like kick catch interference (they don't apply here), once the ball is caught and the returner starts upfield, the two deep flanks (Side Judge and Field Judge) have forward progress on the runner -- in other words, they are responsible for getting the spot -- and so are likely focused on ball carrier and his movement up field. Because the runner took off like a shot, they're already well behind the play and weren't focused on blocking. The Back Judge and Umpire (middle of the field nearer the line of scrimmage) would have had to have gotten this, but were either blocked out by other players or were looking at something else. The two line of scrimmage officials (Line Judge and Head Linesman) were almost certainly reading the runner breaking and setting up to cover the goal line (their responsibility). The Center Judge and Referee would never have called this even had they seen it clearly -- too far away.

It happened pretty quickly so its almost certain that one or more officials saw the result of the block but not the full block and passed on the call.

Thanks for the analysis. It happened so quick but looked suspicious on first viewing.

It just offsets the linemen downfield on Az State's fake punt

The only thing I would say differently is if I am the deep wing on the far side, I am not looking in the primary halo where this occurred. I am cleaning up behind the play. Even if I was, there was a lot of traffic between me and the block.

I think it was a clear BSB but like you said, this is a hard one to see on the field in real time especially because there were 5 blocks all happening at the same time and the runner was not in the clear.

If this play occurred in ND/UGA game and OP posted it, would you say move on?

It's a fair off season football discussion.

It's a great off season discussion. I wish we had viewpoint cameras from all 8 officials to help show the challenge of making these calls in real time on the field. I would be shocked if an official saw the entire block and passed on it but the challenge is seeing the entire block in that specific situation with everything else going on.

If you watched each play over and in slow motion, you could find many uncalled penalties.

If you look for something you will find. If you are looking for officiating bias, you will find.

Watch every WR vs CB play. The CB almost always touches the WR after the 5 yards. Are you going to call a penalty everytime?

We have a few on this site that want a flag called for every act that violates the letter of the rule.

On the disputed targeting non call against Texas, there were two holds by ASU that you can see from the camera angles available. The LT and LG had hands on the shoulders outside the frame. No impact on the play but technically a foul.

Nice catch

Good one to point out with all the sips trying to find other plays to distract for the BS non targeting call that helped them out.

The Texas DBs hold almost on every single play as well but hardly ever get a flag.

Which is why all sports are somewhat rigged.

Who determines what fouls are called and which are not? It's all bullcrap.
