We'll see...had heard behind the scenes convos and think Elko was going w buddy Bateman for DC and then GT offered Tyler S. which prob squashed next steps (but aware that Tyler S didn't want to come back as a position coach and he didn't love it here the first time).

Can someone tell me how smiles did in his first year compared to Bateman...not sure santucci was the problem

Our LBs generally played ok with Santucci coaching. He just couldn't recruit very well. I wouldn't mind him as DC.
Some sure fire guys are, well, sure to be fired.

Nobody knows or has coached the Elko defense more than Santucci. He's the best hire for Elko to implement his defense the way Elko wants IT. Elko is not going to hire some "sure fire" DC guy. It's Elko's defense. Of course he's going to hire a disciple of his to run it.

Santucci never impressed me as LB coach and Elko seems to go with a DC that he has experience with. I think Santucci would be a better fit but there are better options
Durkin did better his second year after Santucci left and Durkin took over coaching the group for which Santucci was responsible.oneeyedag said:

Not saying Durkin is the ideal DC, but Santucci was definitely part of the problem.
Go get Dennis Allen and make him Asst Head Coach.
I guess I'll take anyone at this point, but it's not encouraging that 12 months ago Elko must have deemed Santucci not good enough to be his DC at A&M…only for his other buddy to flop on his face here as DC.

Their defense was terrible his first few years. Much worse than ours this year.
I get that people want to move on, but we repeatedly want to fire coaches and then hire coaches who wouldn't have made it past year 1 if we held them to the same standard as the one we're firing.
Perhaps too much is being made of his short tenure coaching at Duke. Been known to happen.

York is a liability. I've been saying it all year. He also leaves his feet every time he wants to make a tackle, which is elementary stuff. That's not what a team captain should do. And can nobody else line up a defense?
The criticism of York in this thread is utterly ridiculous. And I watched every game this year.
Then you're blind. York is continually behind the play. He runs a slooow 4.8X at best and can't jump. What he does do is put effort in, which is something, I guess.

York is the leading tackler on the team by a substantial margin. There's no damn way he can be what you know it alls are saying and be far and away the leading tackler. But, as we all know, all the former waterboys on here provide nothing but expert evaluation. You see a couple of bad plays and pound your ridiculous drums.

It has nothing to do with money. It's Elko's defensive system. He needs a disciple, a protegee to come in and run it the way it should be run. Looks like Bateman wasn't the answer. Santucci is getting a hard look. But Elko is not going to hire some up and comer yahoo that is some great DC running some other system no matter how good he is. It's Elko's team and Elko's defense. Someone needs to count the number of times York was burned while attempting to cover the forward pass. Write that stat in braille so this blind guy can see.
Santucci produced Buddy Johnson, got actual production out of Aaron Hansford, and got Edge Cooper recruited and started. I'll have more that, thank you!
