Well I would hope a head coach can think broader than just score. I prefer when a coach thinks what has the overall best outcome to help them win the game.
I have lost track of how many times the Texans lost games bc they did not focus on scoring and leaving no time on the clock for the other team.
I have seen many games won bc coaches understand this one and do not leave time on the clock for the other team. Does it work ALL the time. Of course not. But it works a lot. And just bc something weird might happen such as the Broncos having their field goal blocked against the Chiefs, the Broncos still coached to win the game correctly.
Elko himself admitted our pass defense has had major issues the past half of the season. Yet, he coached the end by putting the game in the hands of this bad pass defense. That's the definition of insanity.
In most of those situations where offenses run the clock down it's because they are either leading, tied, or down 3 or less (where a FG still helps them win).
Thinking A&M should have gone down at the 1 yard line to milk clock - the same A&M that was stuff on short yardage situations ever since Moss went down - is just fantasy land hindsight video game strategy.
What makes it even more foolish is that we're talking leaving USC 1:00 left left instead of 1:44, since USC still had two timeouts at their disposal.
So we forgo points and go down at the 1. And then we manage to punch it in on 3rd and 2, even though our short yardage playcalling has been terrible since Moss/Bisontis went down.
And that still leaves USC with 1:00 left...
The funny thing is, that fantasy land "bad" clock management completely whiffs on where the true clock mis-management really lied (though it was picked up in another thread). On 1st and goal from the 7 with 12 seconds left, every A&M defender should have tackled every every USC receiver. You get flagged for defensive holding, but the clock still runs and USC would have had 5 seconds left and no choice but to kick the FG and force OT.THAT was the clock mis-management.
