They matter if for nothing other than practice time.

If it is a game and counts toward your record, then it matters.

No.

Bowl wins are like Participation Trophies. Worthless and for losers. And worse, they breed a loserly attitude.

When my kids were little (age 7 onward) and were handed out participation trophies in sports, I would throw them into the trash. In front of them after telling them what I would do so it would be no surprise and before they built any attachment to them.
I'd explain to them that they had to WIN trophies the hard way. When they WON something, I would display them in my living room. And I did, when they would win tennis tournaments. I still have all their real trophies and medals.

My kids never hated me for it. They remember and laugh about it.
Kids need tough love to become winners. Nothing good is free or easy.

I'm still trying to erase the last two from my memory completely so I guess they mean something.

I've already stated that YES they matter. I'm still so mad we lost to USC which was a game I think we should have easily won.

I'll have to dig up what I posted last year but (on average) A&M's record the following year after a bowl win was much better than A&M's record after a bowl loss.

Winning a bowl game doesn't matter to you? Ironic you saying when they 'won' something.

You would rather lose the bowl game than win it???? WOW

I guess you were more proud of your kids if they lost the final game of the season when it didn't matter than to win the game that didn't matter.

Teaching your kids not to play hard because you think the game is not important is a terrible lesson.

I hope you clarify what you mean. Taken on the surface this may be the silliest comment I have ever seen on here and that is saying something.

Your slogan: Bowl wins are for losers. They breed a loserly attitude.

How you equate a bowl win to a participation trophy is beyond me. No one is saying A&M should be a top 10 team if they would have won the bowl game.

That means bowl losses are for winners and breed a winning attitude.

To be honest it doesn't. We are Texas A&M, not some small school somewhere. I'd rather us be in the playoffs than in some bowl that no one cares about. My aspirations are that we win the National Championship or come close to that. Texas is far ahead of us at this point.

I see that you made some weird extrapolations from what I said about participation trophies, go along with it if it makes you happy.

There is ONE prize. The prize is the National Championship. If you get to the championship game and lose, that is pretty good too.

If you failed to make the playoff, but and win or lose some bowl like we did many years ago (GalleryFurniture.com bowl), then it just reflects badly on us and our standards. Keep in mind, we are Texas A&M, not Middle Tennessee. Being in a bowl means we failed to make the playoffs.

haha... I see you got triggered. 3 posts from you on this.
Let me guess, you are a woman (even though your handle has "man" in it). Only a woman can make such weird extrapolations and get mad about it.

Anyway, please read the post above. The bowl means nothing. If we had won it, so what? Nothing again. If we had celebrated a win, we would be even more pathetic for being happy about something so trivial and meaningless and does not take us to the ultimate prize we are shooting for.,

Considering most years A&M won't make the playoffs then why do you watch any games? By your definition, all games are meaningless once A&M is out of the playoffs.

Btw, I'm a 'real' man. I've always wanted to win every sport game I play. But you go ahead and pick and choose which games you think are important. I'm sure your kids understand from you that if the game is not for the championship then they can give forth little effort.

Then it should mean the world to us because we are not a major or significant program.

If you play the game then play the game. If you are going to dial it in then don't play.

They do matter, to some extent, and I'm tired of people pretending they don't. Just look at how much angst the loss to USC created.

I think it is sad, but I think winning or losing a non-Playoff bowl game has become meaningless. Many of the best players who are going to the NFL don't even bother to play. Many other players hit the transfer portal before the bowl games. The teams playing in the bowl games are not the same as the ones that played all season.

It was a problem even before the playoffs got expanded. Players were sitting out NY6 Bowl games (if they were not part of the playoff that year) making even those supposed major bowls meaningless.

I guess the non playoff bowl games don't bother me but they also don't matter much. I think the coach's like them for the extra practice and game time so the one's that make money probably aren't going anywhere .

Only change I'd make if I were king would be to expand the playoff to 16 teams with no byes. I go back and forth on whether I like the home field advantage or not in round 1. I suppose there should be some advantage for a great regular season but the seedings and schedule comparisons are so hard to evaluate there is an argument that you may reward the wrong teams.

A& M is no national power to be sure . Sitting at somewhere between 20 and 40 year over year . Something is always missing . Not really all that upset about it in yr 1 of a new coaching staff but the next 2 yrs will be a different story. Need to show significant progress or it will probably be time to "reload " as we say.

I suppose the good news for A & M is that if you can find 3 or 4 high quality players in the right spots and not have critical injuries you could probably jump up into top tier from time to time but for whatever reason it hasn't happened . We're not that far off but the broken record gets old.

The players like going to bowl games. The only people saying otherwise are those who ***** about more college football being on.

For some reason those who ***** and complain about games think they should be canceled.

The non-playoff bowl games are just holiday entertainment and nothing more. It has been that way since opt outs started happening. It's hard to put any stock into these games when at least one of the teams is missing several key players that opted out.

They matter if you win. They don't matter if you lose in devastatingly humiliating fashion and need to make yourself feel better about it.

Do you think USC will care that they won the Las Vegas Bowl when Spring ball starts? At the end of the day, they went 7-6.

Yes, think LR will absolutely sell the fact they beat the 2 SEC teams they faced last year in recruiting. Yes for sure

I'm sure they will feel much better in Spring ball with the bowl win versus if they would have lost.

And you need to go look up A&M history.

On average, A&Ms record the following year after a bowl win is much better than coming off a bowl loss.
