One advantage of missing CFP is we have major leg up on UGA and Austinites as far as working the portal. While I'd rather still be playing, one upside is time to recruit the rosters of other SEC teams.

Kudos to the staff.

Per the other thread on this topic, now the key is getting them to mesh with current roster.

Each school probably has staff dedicated year round to recruiting and working the portal, but I'd be willing to bet that Smart and Sark aren't devoting as many mental calories to the portal right now as Elko.

They have the #1, and #3 ranked classes. They don't need to. Being in the playoffs also takes some of the recruiting pressure off because those programs are selling themselves

Great point, OP. We should miss the playoffs every year so we can devote 100% effort to the portal and make sure we get the best players possible.

Wow you guys are brutal. Of course we all want A&M to be in the playoffs.

But OP has a point. No need to rip him for it.

Those teams were playing this time last year too and look at that they're playing again this year. Some teams are just better at this than we are.

Nowhere does it say he's glad. He's just stating we can fix our needs quicker.

Any program worth a damn has a recruiting staff and coaching staff but at the end of the day it's the coaches that pick the players they want. The recruiting staff helps identify interest and communication between coaches and players.

Nice try Sunshine. The OP says an "advantage" to missing the CFP is it gives us a "major" leg up in recruiting the portal. Yeah, the good thing about not winning the lottery is you don't get distracted being rich and you can focus on picking your next numbers.

Exactly. I clearly said that i'd rather be in the playoffs. But if we miss it, we can take advantage. Kirby Smart and Nick Saban said same thing on one downside to making CFP.

So you're not "happy" with your claim that we have an "advantage" and "major" leg up on the teams in the CFP? Ok. Great. Nice attempt at parsing an otherwise ridiculous take. Not only do those teams plainly have the demonstrated ability to do both (unlike us by your own argument), but maybe they don't even need to work as hard at it since kids want to play for a winner and their NIL coffers are overflowing due to their winning. The desperation to find a bright side to our mediocrity is obvious.

Man, all I am saying is that we have an advantage over 2-3 other SEC teams (no longer the real UT) who were busy prepping for meaningful games.

It's not the dark side. We haven't won jack in 100 years. It's past time to stop desperately looking for a silver lining. There's nothing good about missing the playoffs. Nothing. But here we are saying otherwise. That mindset is part of problem.

One things for sure - the staff being stable with a full year under their belt and the roster being known has helped the staff make meaningful and selective decisions and given portal recruits a solid idea off their role, position coach and all A&M and Elko's program can do for them.

You don't know this. For example, Elko could recruit for 8 hours, while Sark could recruit for 8 hours and coach for another 8. I'm not saying Elko doesn't work hard or that Sark is a hard worker, but you can't make assumptions and declare yourself right.

We have one advantage over most other universities. We have more than 530,000 living alumni (8th most in the US and growing rapidly). I suggest doing WAY more than we do to leverage that to raise more NIL. Then I'd go out and buy a team that would easily compete for a championship.
