Determining which college football team has "had more success with less" involves analyzing how well teams perform relative to their recruiting rankings. Success can be measured by factors such as conference titles, playoff appearances, bowl wins, or final rankings compared to recruiting rankings. Here are some teams often recognized for outperforming their recruiting rankings:

1. TCU
Recruiting: Typically ranked outside the top 20 in recruiting classes.
Performance: TCU made it to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in the 2022 season despite modest recruiting rankings.
Conclusion: Their ability to develop 3-star recruits and compete against teams with 4- and 5-star talent is remarkable.

2. Iowa
Recruiting: Consistently ranks in the 30s or 40s in recruiting.
Performance: Regularly competes for Big Ten West titles and consistently finishes seasons ranked.
Conclusion: Known for developing under-the-radar talent, especially offensive linemen and tight ends.

3. Kansas State
Recruiting: Often ranks outside the top 40 in recruiting.
Performance: Has won Big 12 championships and regularly overachieves under coaches like Bill Snyder and Chris Klieman.
Conclusion: Masters of identifying and developing overlooked talent.

4. Wisconsin
Recruiting: Usually ranked in the 25-40 range in recruiting.
Performance: Frequently wins the Big Ten West, appears in New Year's Six bowl games, and produces NFL-ready talent.
Conclusion: Excellent player development and a strong system-oriented approach.

5. Utah
Recruiting: Typically in the 30-40 range in recruiting rankings.
Performance: Won multiple Pac-12 championships and appeared in major bowl games.
Conclusion: Known for physical play and turning lower-rated recruits into stars.

6. Cincinnati (Pre-Big 12)
Recruiting: Historically recruited outside the Power Five level.
Performance: Made the College Football Playoff in 2021 as a Group of Five team.
Conclusion: Showed remarkable development and team cohesion.

Measuring Success

To quantitatively analyze this, you'd compare:
Average recruiting ranking (over 4-5 years for roster building).
Final AP rankings or achievements (e.g., playoff appearances, conference titles)

which college team does less with more
ChatGPT said:

The phrase "doing less with more" is often used to describe a situation where a team, despite having abundant talent, fails to reach its full potential or underperforms relative to its resources and expectations. In the context of college football or basketball, this could apply to programs with significant recruiting success, ample resources, and high expectations, yet who frequently underachieve.

Here are a few college teams that have been historically criticized for "doing less with more" in recent years, based on their talent pool, recruiting success, and performance on the field or court:

1. Texas Longhorns (Football)
  • Why? Texas has one of the most lucrative athletic programs in the country, recruiting classes consistently ranked in the top 10, and vast resources at their disposal. Despite all of this, the Longhorns have struggled to consistently challenge for Big 12 championships or make a major impact in the College Football Playoff (CFP). They've faced coaching instability and have been unable to capitalize on their talent in recent seasons.
2. Miami Hurricanes (Football)
  • Why? Miami was once a powerhouse in college football, but since its move to the ACC, the program has underachieved. Despite attracting top-tier recruits and having a storied history, Miami has often failed to meet expectations. The team's inconsistent performance, especially in big games, has led to criticism that they are not maximizing their resources and talent.
3. UCLA Bruins (Football)
  • Why? UCLA has often been able to bring in high-level talent, but it hasn't translated into consistent success on the field. The team has struggled in the competitive PAC-12, underachieving despite a solid recruiting pipeline, high-profile coaching hires, and a location that should theoretically help attract talent.
4. Texas A&M Aggies (Football)
  • Why? Under Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M has consistently ranked near the top in recruiting and has access to large financial resources. However, despite having high expectations and a loaded roster, the Aggies have struggled to win SEC championships and have often fallen short in big moments, leading to questions about whether they are truly maximizing their potential.
5. North Carolina Tar Heels (Basketball)
  • Why? Historically, UNC is one of the blueblood programs of college basketball, but in recent years, the team has struggled to meet expectations. Despite recruiting high-level talent and being one of the most recognizable brands in the sport, UNC has underperformed in the NCAA Tournament, sometimes failing to make deep runs with teams that on paper seem capable of winning championships.
6. Oklahoma Sooners (Football)
  • Why? Oklahoma has long been one of the most successful programs in college football, with consistent high-level recruiting and a history of dominating the Big 12. However, despite these advantages, the Sooners have consistently underperformed in the CFP era, often falling short when it matters most, particularly in the playoffs and major bowl games.
7. Michigan Wolverines (Football)
  • Why? Michigan, historically one of the most successful programs in college football, has had a long stretch of disappointment in the modern era, especially against rivals like Ohio State. Despite recruiting elite talent and having abundant resources, Michigan has underachieved relative to expectations, especially when it comes to competing for national titles. However, under Jim Harbaugh, the team has shown signs of improvement in recent years.
8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Football)
  • Why? Notre Dame is one of the most prestigious programs in college football, with access to top-tier recruits, a national fanbase, and substantial resources. However, despite making multiple appearances in the College Football Playoff, the team has struggled to make a deep run, often falling short in big games, and raising questions about whether they're living up to their potential.
In college sports, the dynamics of "doing less with more" can be complex. Factors like coaching instability, underperformance in critical games, and program culture can all contribute to teams not reaching their full potential.

TCU - plays in a weak league and is down far more than the 1 year they were up.
Iowa - plays in a weak division full of afterthought teams and can't beat the only relevant team in it, ever.
KSU - Probably the best on the list. But take away the Snyder years and things drop off.
Wisconsin - Glory days are in the past. Haven't been relevant in a long time.
Utah - When this year's version of the Big 12 makes you average, it proves your previous league was garbage.
Cincinnati - Played in a trash league but made the most of their window. Now in an average league and guess what, they are average at best.

If A&M and KSU switched coaches in 1989, A&M would have won at least 2 MNC's in the 90's

that is really a stupid response as Cincinatti as soon as they joined a REAL CONFERENCE has been a doormat!

basically every answer is "yes these are not good teams but beat other bad teams until they are beaten by an actual good team"

other than one year with TCU where they beat Michigan

I'll agree with TCU simply because they punch FAR above their weight class in all sports.

They only have 12k total students and are nowhere near one of the top richest endowed private schools in the country.

We should strive to be more like that instead of having a mens athletic program that rarely wins any hardware in anything despite having everything.

We would have been 13-0 with Michael Bishop as QB and lost to KSU with their punter warming up as QB.
