Don't you have to consider the stew has just gone in the pot? You may end up being right but it is too early to pass judgement, I think. The distribution of talent will be impacted by this format (and NIL) and that will ultimately have a huge impact on how these 12 teams present. We are only in the first phase of this shift. My guess is they give this format 5-10 yrs to evaluate. We/they might like what we/yhey see and stay at 12, or, it might move to 24 or even back to 4 as you have suggested.
You do not have to look hard to see some really odd things happening. SMU, ASU, Indiana, are examples but so are teams like Sam Houston (10-3 in yr 2) who, had they made the FBS jump 5 years ago, might not have had a winning season for 5-10 years.
Also, why move the number until the conference re-alignments get to a point of relative stability?
