Is the Big Ten the Most Overrated Conference Ever?

I don't think any other conference has gotten such a significant push while producing very little results more than the Big Ten has the last 20 years. They've only won 2 national championships in the last 20 years (one of them involved a massive cheating scandal), but the media keeps insisting on putting as many Big Ten teams in the playoffs as they can. Indiana's performance last night is how Big Ten teams perform in the playoffs way more times than not. I wish that the media would stop trying to pretend that the Big Ten is equal to the SEC. Indiana would have been 5-7 at best in the SEC. I also think that Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State definitely would have had a few more losses in the SEC.

I think if indiana had played our schedule in the SEC, which we all know didn't even include georgia, alabama, ole piss, or tennessee, they'd have gone 0-8 SEC, 3-1 Non-Conference since it's obvious they'd have lost to ND. That makes them 3-9 on the season. The only outlier is if they had managed to beat miss st, that would get them to 4-8.

They won last year and look to have the best team again this year. They don't have the same depth of talent that we do, but their top teams are as good or better than ours

It's debatable whether or not Oregon is the best team.

Won't be debatable much longer. There's this thing called the playoffs, which they are in.

They are the only undefeated team and they have victories over 3 teams that finished the season in the top ten.

Under the system used for the first 80 years or so of college football they'd already be the national champions.

But it is a little silly to lean on Oregon in an argument about the Big 10 over the last 20 years

Considering the Big 10s 3rd best team is boat racing the ACC 2nd best team....you might want to change title to ACC.

The media doesn't advocate for the ACC like they do for the Big Ten. My post was about the Indiana-Notre Dame game. I think most people knew that Penn State would beat SMU.

All the media cares about is how many tv sets you can activate.

The B1G has the most, so the media loves them the most.

The media also loves the orange cow because of the tv sets they activate.

So by default, the "give the media/broadcasters whatever they want" committee also loves B1G and orange cow.

It's a coping mechanism for those who feel left out. It's a common theme this time of year among the also-ran SEC programs.

Just watch admins see. OSU is giving a good showing right now over our 3rd best team. Texas is the second best SEC team this year in their first year here.

I know the SEC has been the powerhouse for awhile, and I'm not saying we're going away, but the B1G has leveled the playing field recently. And with NIL, they will continue to.

Big Ten has 3 titles in 24 years and one was gifted via officials. You would think they would have more given the money spent. It's like a Kamala Harris campaign.

The Vols were incredibly overrated all season. They're only there because they beat bama, which is also the only team with a pulse that they beat.

3 b1g teams left vs only 2 sec. Tennessee is there because they went 10-2 and that is a playoff lock if you win 10 games in the SEC. They deserve the same energy as SMU and Indiana. They had a nice regular season but clearly didn't belong in the playoffs.
AgExtension

Maybe not the day to make an argument about how weak the Big 10 is. You can make the historical argument-this is not the year to die on the hill of 'the SEC is better than the Big 10'. And for purposes of this year, not counting Oregon as a Big 10 team is like not counting Texas as an SEC team.

The Vols were incredibly overrated all season. They're only there because they beat bama, which is also the only team with a pulse that they beat.

Here we go: wait until AFTER the blowout to declare the Vols unqualified, a practice which has been going on non-stop for the last 24 hours. Not that people weren't alleging SMU (and possibly Indiana) didn't belong before yesterday, but to them, their loss was PROOF they didn't belong. Now, its Tennessee's LOSS that proves THEY didn't belong. Which, of course, doesn't make sense: each game has a loser, each playoff has half the teams (or thereabouts -- at least a sizable number of the field) out in the first round. By that standard, they would ALL be undeserving regardless of who they are.

But wait, it gets even more convoluted. The committee "SHOULD" have picked Bama, Ole Miss, or South Carolina over any number of teams because a) these teams played a tougher schedule; b) were ostensibly better; and c) a whole host of other reasons. But Tenn not only had a better record than all 3, they beat Bama. Ole Miss had a bad loss (to UK), and SoCar lost to both Bama and Ole Miss and shouldn't get in over either. So Tenn was the logical choice after UGa and t.u. from the SEC and didn't have any real SOS issues, yet they suffered the biggest blowout of the weekend! Make no mistake: the last TD was against scrubs, and it would have been a shutout had the interception (great play, btw) in the end zone not occurred. A weak Roughing the Passer call turned an Ohio State interception into Tenn's first 3 points. I could go on...

None of this even gets to the topic at hand: the fact that the "overrated" conference has 3 teams in Quarters and will likely have 1, if not both, in the finals.

It all boils down to this: virtually all these comments like the ones I'm responding to here, are either based on wishful thinking, are hypocritical, are contradictory, or are just downright absurd. I could use stronger language, but I don't. People need to quit posting on here when they're pissed off. Just because YOU don't like the Big 10 or you WANT the SEC to be the stronger conference doesn't mean a) it is or b) it will end up showing itself to be that way this year.

Get off this SEC crap and root for the Aggies.

Yep. That Indianan had a hell of a schedule.

Also that Penn Stat and Tenn were so much better. They proved they could lose to all the ranked teams on their schedule. (minus Tenn Bama).

The B1G is overrated, in terms of an overall product, it used to be a 3 team league with nothing but Vandy's and MSST to make up the rest. Adding Oregon, USC actually helped them in that aspect. However theyre very top heavy, still have more ****ty teams than good teams.

The SEC was down overall this year as a product, a lot having to do with NIL, and coaching (BK, Sunbelt Billy, Stoops, Venebles, ect). However as an overall product you put USCar against Iowa, Wisconsin etc they're winning. Even Vandy would probably beat most of their teams as would OU.

That said tOSU, Oregon are good teams, so it PSU (just not win it all good), and Ryan Day's job is on the line

This was a long rant that really had nothing to do with what I said. I wasn't pissed off at all, btw.

Want to know what my actual opinion is, and not the one you put in my mouth? Bama is a team with a ton of talent that plays undisciplined ball. Them losing multiple games proves that. Tenn gets credit for beating them sure, but they didn't beat anyone else. They lost to Arkansas (a bad loss), needed OT to beat Florida before Florida got good, and their offense had fallen off a cliff from where they were at the beginning of the season. I had no doubt they would lose this game.

Yes, Ole Miss had a bad loss to Kentucky. But Kentucky was actually playing well at the beginning of the season when they beat Ole Miss. That team fell apart. People forget that Kentucky nearly beat Georgia.

You can argue that SCar shouldn't have gotten in because of the losses to Bama and Ole Miss, but the real reason they were left out for Tenn, Indiana, and SMU was because SCar had an extra loss on their record to LSU that is the fault of the refs. SCar was playing top 10 level football to end the season, and everyone that watched them knows that.

I do think the B1G is overrated. It's an incredibly top-heavy conference. That does't mean that I think OSU, Pedo State, and Oregon aren't really good. They are. I expect Oregon to win the whole thing.

And I'm not just pumping the SEC. I only care about watching good ball. The SEC plays the best football top-to-bottom in the country, but that doesn't mean that I don't think other conferences can have better teams.

The main reason why the SEC was down this year overall is because they didn't play a divisional schedule. I can nearly guarantee that the SEC would have gotten more teams in if they had split them in half geographically, and Tenn would not have been one of them.
