In my class at LSU Law School, a kid from Alabama of all places told me his school song was the Aggie War Hymn!!

Officiated out here several years. Worked Jayton several times. Jayton is a very rich school district. Traveled to games in several top of the line activity buses. Not yellow dogs. Worked a game at Rule one nite. Coach Reed who is at Gordon now was the Rule HC. Jayton team ran on the field and Jaybird band fired up the War Hymn. Closed my eyes for a second thought was on the 50 at Kyle Field. I was standing by Jayton HC. He told me he hated that song. He was a young wise a**. We didn't get a long too well. Rule 45'd 'em.

Wow, I had no idea so many schools used the War Hymn. Good bull.

Poteet, Texas, just south of San Antonio uses it also - but i would expect them to - their mascot - AGGIES.

My HS is beyond confused. War Hymm for the fight song and freaking Eyes of Texas for school song.

My first year of teaching was a first year for one of our admin (huge tu fan - office glowed burnt orange)…

I remember the first day and the Waller band was there to play as the teachers came down to the meetings.. as they started playing, he started clapping… then realized the tune… folded his hands and I never saw him clap again… haha

Seems like most Texas high schools just cribbed their music from colleges. Our fight song at Academy HS is the exact same as Mizzou's, and the school song is taken directly from Okie Lite, right down to the lyrics

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet, but Pinky Wilson didn't write the tune, just the words. The War Hymn is sung to the tune of "Goodbye, my Coney Island baby."

True. I know that Pearland uses the Ohio State song and that Clear Lake uses the same one as Lamar for some reason.

My high school's (Aldine Senior High) fight song was On Wisconsin. We sucked really bad, so it was played rarely.

The "school song," was kick a**, however. It was the Aldine High School prayer (before the ACLU intervened), and the tune was / is beautiful. The words?

"Dear God, please bless our school … and all it stands for. Help keep us free from sin … honest and true. Courage and faith to make … our school a victor. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen."

And, yes, the Ten Commandments were posted in the longest, busiest hallway in the school.

Grand Prairie HS plays it for their fight song, too. I've also heard it at a number (probably half a dozen at least) of smaller (2A-4A) schools in the Northeast/North Texas area over the years. Think Paris down to Canton over to DFW up to Gainesville with a patch down towards Hillsboro. I can't recall specific schools, however.

Most of the time, it is fairly heavily modified and played at a much faster tempo.
