When I hear PSU coach James Franklin complaining that his back up QB had no choice in declaring for the portal before the playoff, I want to ask Franklin, why he did not offer the player more to stay.
I want to ask the player why you think it will be different elsewhere, it is not like PSU QB was a top QB, and most back up QB's that transfer remain back up QB.

No personal responsibility nope it is the portal that is the issue.

If you are a college athlete and the academic classes begin in Jan as does winter practice then you go now.
The transfer portal in the spring does not give a player the chance to succeed to that the winter portal does.

If coaches want kids to stay then give them a reason.

Elko is using the system as well as anyone else the portal is freedom.

There is no rule that prevents a player that enters the transfer portal from playing in a bowl game w/ their current team.

Everything is out of control right now. The NCAA needs to be abolished and a new governing body that operates without bias needs to be installed in its place.

But why make the winter deadline 12/28 when classes don't start until 1/13/25. Why not just close the portal when classes start? 12/28 just seems arbitrary.

Obviously concerned about that winter mini-mester.

Classes start on 1/13 so you don't need to be enrolled for the spring until then.

You do not know what you're talking about. There is no unified academic calendar across the nation. They are state by state (and university system by university system -- sometimes school by school within a system.) Here are two random examples that I'm aware of, chosen for no particular reason.

Florida State starts spring semester on January 6th, 2025: https://registrar.fsu.edu/calendar/extended

Then there are the few schools that use quarters instead of semesters, like Stanford. They started their winter quarter on November 11th, 2024, and it runs until April 15th, 2025: https://studentservices.stanford.edu/calendar/academic-dates/stanford-academic-calendar-2024-2025

As of right now... all athletes are still students first. You can not remove their ability to transfer. This has already been decided in the courts.

Well quarters doesn't matter than now does it. As the portal window is ope way past when a quarter would start so why even bring that up. So find the earliest Spring semester starts and make it that. It sure the hell doesn't need to be 12/28. Nobody is starting classes before the new year. 1/6 would at least get you past all the regular bowls and 2nd level playoff games. The NCAA is doing nothing to make this easier on the athlete or the schools.

OP's point highlights the main irony of the college football system.

This portal window is set up based on an academic calendar. In reality, academics have the least amount of consideration in this process.

If you are in the portal as an undergraduate, it's highly unlikely you are seeking a new major to study. It's because you are seeking to maximize your short term income and long term NFL prospects. I would do the same.

This.^^^^ For schools on the trimester system, Winter term classes start January 6, 2025. For UCLA, as an example, the quarter (they call them quarters, not trimesters, for some reason) starts January 2, which I assume is the enrollment deadline.

https://registrar.ucla.edu/calendars/annual-academic-calendar

(I just chose UCLA because my sister went there. Last I checked, Stanford also runs on trimesters. I'm sure there are others.)

December 28 would be 10 calendar days before classes start for those schools.

The thing is for teams in the playoffs, players have a 5 day window after their season ends to enter the portal if they want to. The 28th isn't the last day for players on playoff teams (unless they lose this weekend), once they get eliminated their clock starts including the team that wins the NC.

ETA: yes it puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to the portal if you wait until the NC but it's not like you have to declare now or you won't have the opportunity.

No, what Gator is referring to are kids that have entered the portal but haven't found a landing spot yet. Incoming transfers can't play until next season.

So we'll pass a law that makes regular students sit out a year academically if they transfer if it will allow fans to punish football players they want to keep. The players they want to push out can get a waiver.

Introduce 60 franchise tags a year for players fans want to shackle to the school for their enjoyment.

Make the portal window longer in January. Guys must declare for the portal prior to the last day you can begin taking classes in the spring semester at your current school.

Close the portal before the Feb signing day.

Let portal transfers transfer over to their new schools and participate in spring practice/off-season workouts without having to take early spring classes.

Require them to begin taking classes no later than Summer I to be eligible for the fall. If the school they transfer to does quarters, they can either begin in March for spring 2nd quarter, or begin in the summer.

This fixes everything with the portal/transfer timing and still keeps an academic element to it.

Isn't there an exclusion for athletes who are playing in the playoff? They have a window to enter the portal after the conclusion of their season if it falls outside the typical portal window?

If so, do those athletes get a special enrollment period to their new school when they decide or do they have to wait until the summer?

That's why I don't think it needs to be tied at all to the spring academic calendar. If you want to keep the charade up, just make them be in classes by summer.

I didn't see the clip/comments in question, but it doesn't come off to me from reading what you wrote that Franklin was trying to shirk responsibility. He's simply saying the calendar is setup in a way that forces this sort of thing. The player has to go for his own good, which he (Franklin) seems to acknowledge.

The fact is, the portal calendar is broken terribly, all to try and pretend they care about academics.

That reads to me like a coach saying, "this sucks for us, but he has to do it because it is his only real option given the broken calendar".

No school can afford to match other offers to get a backup to stay for 1-3 more games, and he probably wouldn't anyway because it would likely mean foregoing a shot at decent sized program.

In short, the calendar has forced kids to choose either to support their team OR to find the best spot for them personally - and these are not mutually possible at this moment.

Tramp96

The coaches determined the dates of the portal.

All NCAA rules originate from the member institutions. The changes this year to the calendar were a result from the coaches wanting to have dead periods during the time they were doing bowl prep (transfer prospects can come to the campus for a recruiting visit, but coaches can't go on the road to them during this time).

This idea that the NCAA determines the calendar rules in a vacuum is absurd. Coaches work with AD's who work with their presidents to formulate rules that ultimately get passed by the NCAA.

This.

I've been following Aggie football for 40 yrs now so its a hard habit to break but I'm less engaged each year. The players aren't in it for Texas A&M, its just our mercenaries we paid to be here vs theirs. Sure there was always some truth to that but now that its blatant and rampant its just hard to care as much. And that's probably for the better for my health.
