That's hilarious, and probably more common than we realize.

Happens all the time, or used to years ago. There's a few bandsmen that were pretty bad, wanted to switch instruments, or even didn't know how to play when they joined. Most picked it up over time but a few never really did. They focused on the marching. Very often, at the beginning of the year, freshmen are told to march first, then worry about playing once they have the marching down. There's plenty of upper classmen that could do both and make all the volume of sound that is needed on the field. Most of the band could and did march and play well enough even as freshman, however, so this is the exception and not the rule.

The last couple of decades there has been more of an emphasis on ability to play a marching instrument and play reasonably well so getting enough cadets to fill up the band to the intended numbers wasn't an issue.

This is hilarious given how big high school band has turned into a military industrial complex in Texas. One would think you could build every band in the country just based on Texas HS alone.

Not uncommon in the 80s

We had one guy that we took his mouthpiece away so he WOULDNT play his instrument

I mean, they don't play anything that 6th grade beginners couldn't pick up in a week....

Well, I don't know about that. /never could play an instrument of any kind, unless we're talking about mom's pots & pans

I faked trombone in HS marching band. I was just a freshman but I couldn't play and count my steps at the same time. Very easy to fake. You just move your arm back and forth

Col Brewer said they used to just hand guys trumpets back in the day. I think my audition in the fall of '15 was much more difficult than the stuff we played.

Noble Men of Kyle is the easiest, it's just the same 6 measures for 2 minutes

There was a guy in the band when I was there who had no idea how to play an instrument - so he held a trumpet and just marched and faked it. Now days though, there is a required tryout (none back in my day) and I believe they have enough applicants that this likely doesn't happen any longer.

Easy to PRETEND. But faking is about tricking others, and a keen eye can spot slide movement that's out of sync with the rest of the file.

No Aggie Band experience, but my 5A marching band would do this to a point.

We had "alternates" that didn't actually have a marching position until attrition/eligibility opened up a few spots.

We made the state marching contest in 1989 and I recently watched the video and remembered that there were two trumpet "players" (who were actually saxophone players) just holding instruments and not playing, there may have been a few more. Our director had wanted to keep the lines clean so he moved a few folks around as not to have a mix of instruments along the lines.

I played cornet. One of my fish buddies "played" one also. He had never held one in his life. By the time we were seniors he could play Wild Cat and nothing else. Of course our senior year he became Combined Band Commander and on the bugle rank. At every reunion he is reminded of that fact!

I don't think so. It doesn't work that way at all

Yep ... this is really common, especially at high schools with top band programs.

The director at my kids' school would often have just the top concert band members play certain sections of the marching show, because the music was too hard for the second- and third-band kids to play while marching.

So much for our "Aggies don't lie, cheat or steal or tolerate anyone who does." motto.

I am just learning about HS band and it is an eye opening experience. The level of commitment and competition rivals HS football. It's completely bonkers.

I marched in HS band. They stressed that marching >>> playing. There was no foul as a freshman (or really anyone) if you faked playing to focus on the marching drill. The more experienced members could handle playing the music.

Real band dorks when they find out some schmo got by pretending to be in the FTAB for years:

"Who? Who does not know how to play the instrument?"

When I was a freshman in 1980 the FTAB had a table in the MSC recruiting non-corp members to be in the band.
They said you did not have to play the instrument, but if you wanted to learn they would teach you. You had to dress the part on gameday including the haircut, and attend all band practices, but no corp membership. This was before Desert Storm when I am sure the corp numbers were down and hence the ability to form a band with enough marchers for the complexity of formation was difficult.

My high school would have kids hold instruments and just march if they played a concert only instrument like Oboe or Bassoon. This really isn't a story, and I can't see anyone caring. The only thing would be when they send fish and sophomores to play at university events.
